Rapid development has profoundly altered public and private life in Thailand. In her provocative study of contemporary commerce in Bangkok, Ara Wilson captures the intimate effects of the global economy in this vibrant city. The Intimate Economies of Bangkok is a multifaceted portrait of the intertwining of identities, relationships, and economics during Bangkok's boom years. Using innovative case studies of women's and men's participation in a range of modern markets-department stores, go-go bars, a popular downtown mall, a telecommunications company, and the direct sales corporations Amway and Avon-Wilson chronicles the powerful expansion of capitalist exchange into further reaches of Thai society. She shows how global economies have interacted with local systems to create new kinds of lifestyles, ranging from "tomboys" to corporate tycoons to sex workers. Combining feminist theory with classic anthropological understandings of exchange, this historically grounded ethnography maps the reverberations of gender, sexuality, and ethnicity at the hub of Bangkok's modern economy. 606 $aSex role$zThailand$zBangkok 606 $aCapitalism$xSocial aspects$zThailand$zBangkok 606 $aGlobalization 606 $aWomen$zThailand$xSocial conditions 606 $aWomen$zThailand$xEconomic conditions 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aSex role 615 0$aCapitalism$xSocial aspects 615 0$aGlobalization. 615 0$aWomen$xSocial conditions. 615 0$aWomen$xEconomic conditions. 676 $a381/.1/09593 700 $aWilson$b Ara$01033331 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910455283303321 996 $aThe intimate economies of Bangkok$92451819 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02933nam 2200577 a 450 001 9910457743603321 005 20200520144314.0 010 $a1-283-29339-0 010 $a9786613293398 010 $a1-935281-42-9 035 $a(CKB)2550000000049566 035 $a(EBL)782031 035 $a(OCoLC)756484278 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000538531 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)12251361 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000538531 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10559720 035 $a(PQKB)10615215 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC782031 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL782031 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10506601 035 $a(CaONFJC)MIL329339 035 $a(EXLCZ)992550000000049566 100 $a20110622d2011 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurcn||||||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 00$aEmerging cancer therapeutics$hVolume 2, issue 2$iLeukemia$b[electronic resource] /$fUday R.
