Seeking to account for the strong appeal among the population of a symbolic interpretation of the Eucharist, it situates the theological debate in the context of conflict between guild members and the leading citizens in the city council over perceived growing political authoritarianism and the political future of the city, and between artisans and powerful merchant elites over changing economic realities of the early-modern economy. The author argues that the adoption of a symbolic interpretation of the Eucharist formed part of a broader anti-mediational ideology that its supporters applied in the realms of politics, economics, and religion. 410 0$aStudies in the history of Christian traditions ;$vv. 158. 606 $aLord's Supper$xHistory$y16th century 606 $aSacramentarians$zGermany$zAugsburg 606 $aChristian sociology$zGermany$zAugsburg$xHistory$y16th century 607 $aAugsburg (Germany)$xChurch history$y16th century 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aLord's Supper$xHistory 615 0$aSacramentarians 615 0$aChristian sociology$xHistory 676 $a234/.163 700 $aVan Amberg$b Joel$0883206 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910457638103321 996 $aA real presence$91972865 997 $aUNINA
