It argues that the transformation of Roman Greece into a classicizing 'museum' was a specific response of the provincial Greek elites to the cultural politics of the Roman imperial monarchy. Against a background of Roman debates about Greek culture and Roman decadence, Augustus promoted the ideal of a Roman debt to a 'classical' Greece rooted in Europe and morally opposed to a stereotyped Asia. In Greece the regime signalled its admiration for Athens, Sparta, Olympia and Plataea as symbols of these past Greek glories. Cued by the Augustan monarchy, provincial Greek notables expressed their Roman orientation by competitive cultural work (revival of ritual; restoration of buildings) aimed at further emphasising Greece's 'classical' legacy. Reprised by Hadrian, the Augustan construction of 'classical' Greece helped to promote the archaism typifying Greek culture under the principate. 410 0$aGreek culture in the Roman world. 517 3 $aGreece & the Augustan Cultural Revolution 606 $aSocial change$zGreece$xHistory$yTo 1500 606 $aElite (Social sciences)$zGreece$xHistory$yTo 1500 606 $aEthnicity$zGreece$xHistory$yTo 1500 606 $aAcculturation$zGreece$xHistory$yTo 1500 606 $aPolitical culture$zGreece$xHistory$yTo 1500 606 $aCities and towns, Ancient$zGreece 607 $aGreece$xCivilization$xRoman influences 607 $aGreece$xMoral conditions 615 0$aSocial change$xHistory 615 0$aElite (Social sciences)$xHistory 615 0$aEthnicity$xHistory 615 0$aAcculturation$xHistory 615 0$aPolitical culture$xHistory 615 0$aCities and towns, Ancient 676 $a938/.09 700 $aSpawforth$b Antony$0253464 801 0$bUkCbUP 801 1$bUkCbUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910457504203321 996 $aGreece and the Augustan cultural revolution$91576758 997 $aUNINA
