Examining the concept from a historical perspective, Davide Rodogno explores the understudied cases of European interventions and noninterventions in the Ottoman Empire and brings a new view to this international practice for the contemporary era. While it is commonly believed that humanitarian interventions are a fairly recent development, Rodogno demonstrates that almost two centuries ago an international community, under the aegis of certain European powers, claimed a moral and political right to intervene in other states' affairs to save strangers from massacre, atrocity, or extermination. On some occasions, these powers acted to protect fellow Christians when allegedly "uncivilized" states, like the Ottoman Empire, violated a "right to life." Exploring the political, legal, and moral status, as well as European perceptions, of the Ottoman Empire, Rodogno investigates the reasons that were put forward to exclude the Ottomans from the so-called Family of Nations. He considers the claims and mixed motives of intervening states for aiding humanity, the relationship between public outcry and state action or inaction, and the bias and selectiveness of governments and campaigners. An original account of humanitarian interventions some two centuries ago, Against Massacre investigates the varied consequences of European involvement in the Ottoman Empire and the lessons that can be learned for similar actions today. 410 0$aHuman rights and crimes against humanity. 606 $aHumanitarian assistance, European$zTurkey 607 $aTurkey$xHistory$yOttoman Empire, 1288-1918 608 $aElectronic books. 610 $aArmenian Question. 610 $aArmenians. 610 $aBattle of Navarino. 610 $aBelgium. 610 $aBosnia and Herzegovina. 610 $aCapitulations. 610 $aCold War. 610 $aConcert of Europe. 610 $aConference of Constantinople. 610 $aCongo Free State. 610 $aCongress of Berlin. 610 $aCretan Christians. 610 $aCrete. 610 $aEastern Question. 610 $aEastern crisis. 610 $aEgypt. 610 $aEurope. 610 $aFamily of Nations. 610 $aFrance. 610 $aGreat Britain. 610 $aGreco-Ottoman War. 610 $aGreece. 610 $aIslam. 610 $aLebanon. 610 $aMacedonia. 610 $aMacedonian Question. 610 $aMorea. 610 $aMount Lebanon. 610 $aOttoman Christians. 610 $aOttoman Empire. 610 $aOttoman Greece. 610 $aParis Conference. 610 $aPhilhellenes. 610 $aRumelia. 610 $aRusso-Turkish War. 610 $aSyria. 610 $aThe Responsibility to Protect. 610 $aThird Marquess of Salisbury. 610 $aarmed intervention. 610 $aatrocity. 610 $acorruption. 610 $adespotism. 610 $aextermination. 610 $ahuman rights. 610 $ahumanitarian intervention. 610 $ahumanitarianism. 610 $ahumanity. 610 $ainsurgency. 610 $ainsurrection. 610 $ainternational peace. 610 $ainternational relations. 610 $ainternational security. 610 $alegal doctrine. 610 $amassacre. 610 $amilitary intervention. 610 $amilitary occupation. 610 $anationalism. 610 $anonintervention. 610 $apolygamy. 610 $apublic opinion. 610 $areforms. 610 $arefugees. 610 $arescue. 610 $arights. 610 $aslavery. 610 $astate action. 610 $astate inaction. 610 $aterrorist attacks. 610 $auprisings. 610 $avictims. 615 0$aHumanitarian assistance, European 676 $a361.2609561 700 $aRodogno$b Davide$0451508 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910457445903321 996 $aAgainst massacre$954063 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02061nam 2200469z- 450 001 9910557564303321 005 20211118 035 $a(CKB)5400000000043984 035 $a(oapen)https://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/74359 035 $a(oapen)doab74359 035 $a(EXLCZ)995400000000043984 100 $a20202111d2020 |y 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurmn|---annan 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 00$aDevelopmental Dyslexia: From Cross-Linguistic and Bilingual Perspectives 210 $cFrontiers Media SA$d2020 215 $a1 online resource (130 p.) 311 08$a2-88966-228-4 330 $aThis eBook is a collection of articles from a Frontiers Research Topic.
