Erik Mueggler introduces Scottish botanist George Forrest, who employed Naxi adventurers in his fieldwork from 1906 until his death in 1932. We also meet American Joseph Francis Charles Rock, who, in 1924, undertook a dangerous expedition to Gansu and Tibet with the sons and nephews of Forrest's workers. Mueggler describes how the Naxi workers and their Western employers rendered the earth into specimens, notes, maps, diaries, letters, books, photographs, and ritual manuscripts. Drawing on an ancient metaphor of the earth as a book, Mueggler provides a sustained meditation on what can be copied, translated, and revised and what can be folded back into the earth. 606 $aBotanists -- Scotland -- Biography 606 $aBotanists -- United States -- Biography 606 $aBotany -- Fieldwork -- China -- Gansu Sheng -- History -- 20th century 606 $aBotany -- Fieldwork -- China -- Tibet Autonomous Region -- History -- 20th century 606 $aBotany -- Fieldwork -- China -- Yunnan Sheng -- History -- 20th century 606 $aForrest, George, 1873-1932 -- Travel 606 $aGansu Sheng (China) -- Description and travel 606 $aRock, Joseph Francis Charles, 1884-1962 -- Travel 606 $aTibet Autonomous Region (China) -- Description and travel 606 $aYunnan Sheng (China) -- Description and travel 606 $aBotany$xFieldwork$xHistory$y20th century$zChina$zYunnan Sheng$vBiography 606 $aBotany$xHistory$xFieldwork$y20th century$zChina$zGansu Sheng$vBiography 606 $aBotany$xFieldwork$xHistory$y20th century$zChina$zTibet Autonomous Region 606 $aBotanists$zScotland 606 $aBotanists$zUnited States 606 $aBotany$2HILCC 606 $aEarth & Environmental Sciences$2HILCC 606 $aPlant Geography$2HILCC 608 $aElectronic books. 615 4$aBotanists -- Scotland -- Biography. 615 4$aBotanists -- United States -- Biography. 615 4$aBotany -- Fieldwork -- China -- Gansu Sheng -- History -- 20th century. 615 4$aBotany -- Fieldwork -- China -- Tibet Autonomous Region -- History -- 20th century. 615 4$aBotany -- Fieldwork -- China -- Yunnan Sheng -- History -- 20th century. 615 4$aForrest, George, 1873-1932 -- Travel. 615 4$aGansu Sheng (China) -- Description and travel. 615 4$aRock, Joseph Francis Charles, 1884-1962 -- Travel. 615 4$aTibet Autonomous Region (China) -- Description and travel. 615 4$aYunnan Sheng (China) -- Description and travel. 615 0$aBotany$xFieldwork$xHistory 615 0$aBotany$xHistory$xFieldwork 615 0$aBotany$xFieldwork$xHistory 615 0$aBotanists 615 0$aBotanists 615 7$aBotany 615 7$aEarth & Environmental Sciences 615 7$aPlant Geography 676 $a580.92/2 700 $aMueggler$b Erik, $4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$01035988 801 0$bDE-B1597 801 1$bDE-B1597 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910457439103321 996 $aThe Paper Road$92456025 997 $aUNINA
