Conclusions: Sustainable Constitutionalism Through Practice -- $tReferences -- $tIndex 330 $aConstitutionalism is steadily becoming the prevalent form of governance in Africa. But how does constitutionalism deal with the lingering effects of colonialism? And how does constitutional law deal with Islamic principles in the region? African Constitutionalism and the Role of Islam seeks to answer these questions. Constitutional governance has not been, nor will be, easily achieved, Abdullahi Ahmed An-Na'im argues. But setbacks and difficulties are to be expected in the process of adaptation and indigenization of an essentially alien concept-that of of nation-state-and its role in large-scale political and social organization.An-Na'im discusses the problems of implementing constitutionalized forms of government specific to Africa, from definitional to conceptual and practical issues. The role of Islam in these endeavors is open to challenge and reformulation, and should not be taken for granted or assumed to be necessarily negative or positive, An-Na'im asserts, and he emphasizes the role of the agency of Muslims in the process of adapting constitutionalism to the values and practices of their own societies. By examining the incremental successes that some African nations have already achieved and An-Na'im reveals the contingent role that Islam has to play in this process. Ultimately, these issues will determine the long-term sustainability of constitutionalism in Africa. 410 0$aPennsylvania studies in human rights. 606 $aIslam and state 606 $aConstitutional law (Islamic law) 606 $aConstitutional law$zAfrica$xPhilosophy 606 $aConstitutional law$zAfrica 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aIslam and state. 615 0$aConstitutional law (Islamic law) 615 0$aConstitutional law$xPhilosophy. 615 0$aConstitutional law 676 $a342.6 700 $aAn-Na'im$b Abdullahi Ahmed, $0285813 801 0$bDE-B1597 801 1$bDE-B1597 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910457370003321 996 $aAfrican constitutionalism and the role of Islam$91327948 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02862nam 22006972 450 001 9910790487803321 005 20151005020624.0 010 $a1-139-53986-8 010 $a1-107-22816-6 010 $a1-283-52192-X 010 $a1-139-52705-3 010 $a9786613834379 010 $a0-511-92055-5 010 $a1-139-52585-9 010 $a1-139-53171-9 010 $a1-139-53052-6 010 $a1-139-52824-6 035 $a(CKB)2670000000231625 035 $a(EBL)977161 035 $a(OCoLC)804664854 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000695314 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11403157 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000695314 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10675925 035 $a(PQKB)10740598 035 $a(UkCbUP)CR9780511920554 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC977161 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL977161 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10583278 035 $a(CaONFJC)MIL383437 035 $a(EXLCZ)992670000000231625 100 $a20100920d2012|||| uy| 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur||||||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 10$aDivining the Etruscan world $ethe brontoscopic calendar and religious practice /$fJean MacIntosh Turfa$b[electronic resource] 210 1$aCambridge :$cCambridge University Press,$d2012. 215 $a1 online resource (xiii, 408 pages) $cdigital, PDF file(s) 300 $aTitle from publisher's bibliographic system (viewed on 05 Oct 2015). 311 $a1-107-00907-3 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references and index. 327 $gEntha?lt auch$tBrontoscopic calendar /$rJohannes Lydus. 330 $aThe Etruscan Brontoscopic Calendar is a rare document of omens foretold by thunder. It long lay hidden, embedded in a Greek translation within a Byzantine treatise from the age of Justinian. The first complete English translation of the Brontoscopic Calendar, this book provides an understanding of Etruscan Iron Age society as revealed through the ancient text, especially the Etruscans' concerns regarding the environment, food, health and disease. Jean MacIntosh Turfa also analyzes the ancient Near Eastern sources of the Calendar and the subjects of its predictions, thereby creating a picture of the complexity of Etruscan society reaching back before the advent of writing and the recording of the calendar. 606 $aEtruscans$xReligion 606 $aOmens 606 $aCalendar, Greek 606 $aAstronomy, Greek 615 0$aEtruscans$xReligion. 615 0$aOmens. 615 0$aCalendar, Greek. 615 0$aAstronomy, Greek. 676 $a299/.9294 700 $aTurfa$b Jean MacIntosh$f1947-$0853452 801 0$bUkCbUP 801 1$bUkCbUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910790487803321 996 $aDivining the Etruscan world$93850764 997 $aUNINA
