Using late Medieval English literature, including some of Chaucer's writings, these essays do not try to define a secular realm distinct and separate from the divine or religious, but instead analyze intersections of the sacred and the profane, suggesting that these two categories are mutually constitutive rather than antithetical. With essays by former students of John V. Fleming, the collection pays tribute to the Princeton University professor emeritus through wide-ranging scholarship and literary criticism. Including reflections on depictions of Bathsheba, Troilus and Criseyde, the Legend of Good Women, Chaucer's Pardoner, and Margery Kempe, these essays focus on literature while ranging into history, philosophy, and the visual arts. Taken together, the work suggests that the domain of the sacred, as perceived in the Middle Ages, can variously be seen as having a hierarchical or a complementary relationship to the things of this world. 606 $aEnglish literature$yMiddle English, 1100-1500$xHistory and criticism 606 $aHoly, The, in literature 606 $aSecularism in literature 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aEnglish literature$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aHoly, The, in literature. 615 0$aSecularism in literature. 676 $a821/.1 700 $aEpstein$b Robert , $0938877 702 $aEpstein$b Robert 702 $aRobins$b William 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910456977003321 996 $aSacred and profane in Chaucer and late medieval literature$92116418 997 $aUNINA LEADER 03874nam 2200529z 450 001 9910149612103321 005 20210111162208.0 010 $a4-7649-7088-0 035 $a(CKB)3710000000934673 035 $a(JP-MeL)3000039307 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC5400495 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL5400495 035 $a(OCoLC)1038487125 035 $a(JP-MeKC)3000426729 035 $a(EXLCZ)993710000000934673 100 $a20211007d2015 ||| | 101 0 $ajpn 135 $aur|n||||un||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 10$a????????????????????6? ????
