To no one's surprise, however, the year was dominated by the issues that had captivated the world's attention at the end of 2001: the attacks on the United States and the subsequent 'war on terror' declared by the Bush administration. Canada had chosen to stand 'shoulder to shoulder' with its southern neighbour in response to those attacks, and in 2002 the meaning of that commitment became clear as Canada entered into full-scale combat operations in Afghanistan, suffered its first casualties, and ended the year torn over whether to follow the United States should it choose to send troops to Iraq.On the home front, a battle of an altogether different magnitude reached a turning point with the seeming resolution of the long-running struggle between Prime Minister Jean Chrétien and Minister of Finance Paul Martin, even though by year's end, it was by no means clear who had actually won. Similarly, a number of the consequences of the 9/11 attacks remained unresolved. Changes to legislation regarding national security failed to be approved; Ottawa software engineer Maher Arar, who was arrested and deported by the United States on suspicion of terrorist links, languished in a Syrian jail despite official protest by the Canadian Government; and the war drums were beating loudly around Iraq.Continuing in the tradition of excellence for which the series has long been acclaimed, the Canadian Annual Review of Politics and Public Affairs 2002 presents detailed information and insightful analyses of issues and events that have had a lasting impact both nationally and internationally. 606 $aPOLITICAL SCIENCE / General$2bisacsh 607 $aCanada$xForeign relations$y1945- 607 $aCanada$xEconomic conditions$y1945- 607 $aCanada$xPolitics and government 608 $aElectronic books. 615 7$aPOLITICAL SCIENCE / General. 676 $a327.71 702 $aMutimer$b David 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910456824603321 996 $aCanadian annual review of politics and public affairs 2002$92008829 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02626nam 2200721 450 001 9910797251803321 005 20230605052022.0 010 $a1-4426-5070-2 010 $a1-4426-3232-1 024 7 $a10.3138/9781442632325 035 $a(CKB)3710000000421427 035 $a(EBL)3432069 035 $a(OCoLC)929153725 035 $a(SSID)ssj0001499693 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)12630681 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0001499693 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)11514097 035 $a(PQKB)11637073 035 $a(CEL)450025 035 $a(OCoLC)918589065 035 $a(CaBNVSL)thg00930947 035 $a(DE-B1597)465817 035 $a(OCoLC)944178669 035 $a(DE-B1597)9781442632325 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL4669509 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr11256041 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC4669509 035 $a(MdBmJHUP)musev2_107222 035 $a(EXLCZ)993710000000421427 100 $a20160915h19721972 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aUrban systems development in Central Canada $eselected papers /$fedited by L.
