Drawing on archival and ethnographic sources, Pamela E. Klassen shows how and why the very notion of healing within North America has been infused with a Protestant "supernatural liberalism." In the course of coming to their changing vision of healing, liberal Protestants became pioneers three times over: in the struggle against the cultural and medical pathologizing of homosexuality; in the critique of Christian missionary triumphalism; and in the diffusion of an ever-more ubiquitous anthropology of "body, mind, and spirit." At a time when the political and anthropological significance of Christianity is being hotly debated, Spirits of Protestantism forcefully argues for a reconsideration of the historical legacies and cultural effects of liberal Protestantism, even for the anthropology of religion itself. 410 4$aThe Anthropology of Christianity 606 $aHealing - Religious aspects - Protestant churches 606 $aHealing -- Religious aspects -- Protestant churches 606 $aLiberalism (Religion) - North America - History 606 $aLiberalism (Religion) -- North America -- History 606 $aProtestant churches - North America - History 606 $aProtestant churches -- North America -- History 606 $aProtestantism - North America - History 606 $aProtestantism -- North America -- History 606 $aHealing$xReligious aspects$xProtestant churches$zNorth America 606 $aProtestantism$xHistory$zNorth America 606 $aProtestant churches$xHistory$zNorth America 606 $aLiberalism (Religion)$xHistory 606 $aComplementary Therapies 606 $aChristianity 606 $aTherapeutics 606 $aReligion 606 $aHumanities 606 $aAnalytical, Diagnostic and Therapeutic Techniques and Equipment 606 $aFaith Healing 606 $aSpiritual Therapies 606 $aProtestantism 606 $aReligion$2HILCC 606 $aPhilosophy & Religion$2HILCC 606 $aChristianity$2HILCC 608 $aElectronic books. 615 4$aHealing - Religious aspects - Protestant churches. 615 4$aHealing -- Religious aspects -- Protestant churches. 615 4$aLiberalism (Religion) - North America - History. 615 4$aLiberalism (Religion) -- North America -- History. 615 4$aProtestant churches - North America - History. 615 4$aProtestant churches -- North America -- History. 615 4$aProtestantism - North America - History. 615 4$aProtestantism -- North America -- History. 615 0$aHealing$xReligious aspects$xProtestant churches 615 0$aProtestantism$xHistory 615 0$aProtestant churches$xHistory 615 0$aLiberalism (Religion)$xHistory 615 2$aComplementary Therapies 615 2$aChristianity 615 2$aTherapeutics 615 2$aReligion 615 2$aHumanities 615 2$aAnalytical, Diagnostic and Therapeutic Techniques and Equipment 615 2$aFaith Healing 615 2$aSpiritual Therapies 615 2$aProtestantism 615 7$aReligion 615 7$aPhilosophy & Religion 615 7$aChristianity 676 $a234.131 700 $aKlassen$b Pamela E$g(Pamela Edith),$f1967-$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$0882470 801 0$bDE-B1597 801 1$bDE-B1597 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910456797903321 996 $aSpirits of Protestantism$92585758 997 $aUNINA
