Die Entwicklungen werden mit denen in anderen romanischen Sprachen kontrastiert, wobei dem italienischen Modussystem aufgrund seiner bemerkenswerten Kontinuität die Funktion einer Kontrastfolie zukommt. In der Analyse wird die zentrale Bedeutung modalitätsspezifischer Domänen für die Organisation und Ausdifferenzierung der Modussysteme in den romanischen Sprachen deutlich. Sie erscheinen insbesondere als der relevante ,Raum' für Sprachwandelprozesse, deren grundlegende Prinzipien in der Untersuchung systematisch herausgearbeitet werden. In diesem Zusammenhang treten auch die Beziehungen zwischen dem Konjunktiv und indikativischen Verbalkategorien hervor, deren modales Potential in der historischen Entwicklung der romanischen Sprachen in unterschiedlichem Grade ausgebaut wurde. Ganz neue und bislang nicht gewürdigte Korpusdaten vermitteln zudem höchst interessante Einblicke in Übergangs- und Restrukturierungsprozesse im Rahmen typischer Kontexte sprachlichen Wandels.
