Through detailed analyses of the biographers, critics and epigones who carefully crafted and preserved Johnson's life for posterity, Hart explores the emergence of what came to be called 'The Age of Johnson'. Hart shows how late seventeenth- and early eighteenth-century Britain experienced the emergence and consolidation of a rich and diverse culture of property. In dedicating himself to Johnson's death, Hart argues, James Boswell turned his friend into a monument, a piece of public property. Through subtle analyses of copyright, forgery and heritage in eighteenth-century life, this study traces the emergence of competing forms of cultural property: a Hanoverian politics of property engages a Jacobite politics of land. Kevin Hart places Samuel Johnson within this rich cultural context, demonstrating how Johnson came to occupy a place at the heart of the English literary canon. 517 3 $aSamuel Johnson & the Culture of Property 606 $aProperty$xSocial aspects$zGreat Britain$xHistory$y18th century 606 $aLiterature and society$zGreat Britain$xHistory$y18th century 606 $aIntellectual property$zGreat Britain$xHistory$y18th century 606 $aCultural property$zGreat Britain$xHistory$y18th century 606 $aBiography as a literary form 606 $aEconomics in literature 607 $aGreat Britain$xCivilization$y18th century 615 0$aProperty$xSocial aspects$xHistory 615 0$aLiterature and society$xHistory 615 0$aIntellectual property$xHistory 615 0$aCultural property$xHistory 615 0$aBiography as a literary form. 615 0$aEconomics in literature. 676 $a828/.609 700 $aHart$b Kevin$f1954-$0527726 801 0$bUkCbUP 801 1$bUkCbUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910455068203321 996 $aSamuel Johnson and the culture of property$92458714 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02382nam 2200625 a 450 001 9910456593403321 005 20200520144314.0 010 $a0-8018-9530-8 035 $a(CKB)2520000000007627 035 $a(OCoLC)593240623 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebrary10365012 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000342109 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11278385 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000342109 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10270565 035 $a(PQKB)10110237 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC3318510 035 $a(MdBmJHUP)muse2663 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL3318510 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10365012 035 $a(OCoLC)923195309 035 $a(EXLCZ)992520000000007627 100 $a20080527d2009 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurcn||||||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aRakes, highwaymen, and pirates$b[electronic resource] $ethe making of the modern gentleman in the eighteenth century /$fErin Mackie 210 $aBaltimore $cJohns Hopkins University Press$d2009 215 $a1 online resource (244 p.) 300 $aBibliographic Level Mode of Issuance: Monograph 311 $a0-8018-9088-8 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references (p.
