The present study is the first to investigate the history of the four virtues in the Latin Middle Ages from patristic times to the late fourteenth century. It examines the position of the cardinal virtues between religious and secularized conceptions of morality and attempts to reveal some distinctly Christian aspects of medieval virtue theory notwithstanding its manifest indebtedness to ancient ethics. Exploring learned and popularizing sources alike, including much unedited material, this study covers a broad spectrum of moral debate during ten centuries of Western intellectual history. 410 0$aBrill's studies in intellectual history ;$vv. 202. 606 $aCardinal virtues$xHistory of doctrines 606 $aEthics, Medieval 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aCardinal virtues$xHistory of doctrines. 615 0$aEthics, Medieval. 676 $a241/.40940902 700 $aBejczy$b Istva?n Pieter$f1965-$0872928 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910456437103321 996 $aThe cardinal virtues in the Middle Ages$91948698 997 $aUNINA
