Based on extensive examination of new archival materials, David Shearer finds that most repression during the Stalinist dictatorship of the 1930's was against marginal social groups such as petty criminals, deviant youth, sectarians, and the unemployed and unproductive. It was because Soviet leaders regarded social disorder as more of a danger to the state than political opposition that they instituted a new form of class war to defend themselves against this perceived threat. Despite the combined work of the political and civil police the efforts to cleanse society failed; this failure set the stage for the massive purges that decimated the country in the late 1930's. 410 0$aYale-Hoover series on Stalin, Stalinism, and the Cold War. 606 $aPolice$zSoviet Union$xHistory 606 $aPolitical persecution$zSoviet Union$xHistory 606 $aSocial control$zSoviet Union$xHistory 606 $aPolitical purges$zSoviet Union$xHistory 606 $aSocialism$zSoviet Union$xHistory 607 $aSoviet Union$xSocial conditions 607 $aSoviet Union$xPolitics and government$y1917-1936 607 $aSoviet Union$xPolitics and government$y1936-1953 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aPolice$xHistory. 615 0$aPolitical persecution$xHistory. 615 0$aSocial control$xHistory. 615 0$aPolitical purges$xHistory. 615 0$aSocialism$xHistory. 676 $a363.20947/09041 700 $aShearer$b David R.$f1952-$0253507 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910456095303321 996 $aPolicing Stalin's socialism$9851700 997 $aUNINA
