Concerning Beards offers an important new long-term perspective on health and the male body in British society. It argues that the male face has long been an important site for the articulation of bodily health and vigour, as well as masculinity. Through an exploration of the history of male facial hair in England, Alun Withey underscores its complex meanings, medical implications and socio-cultural significance from the mid-17th to the early 20th century. Herein, he charts the gradual shift in concepts of facial hair and shaving - away from 'formal' medicine and practice - towards new concepts of hygiene and personal grooming. The ebook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 3.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com. Open access was funded by the Wellcome Trust. This book is part of the Facialities series, which explores the social, cultural and political significance of the face in human history. 517 $aConcerning beards 606 $aGender studies: men$2bicssc 606 $aHistory of fashion$2bicssc 606 $aHistory of medicine$2bicssc 606 $aMaterial culture$2bicssc 606 $aModern history to 20th century: c 1700 to c 1900$2bicssc 606 $aSocial & cultural history$2bicssc 610 $a17th century 610 $a20th century 610 $abritish history 610 $acultural history 610 $aengland 610 $aenglish history 610 $ahistory 610 $ahistory of beards 610 $ahistory of cosmetics 610 $ahistory of facial hair 610 $ahistory of fashion 610 $ahistory of masculinity 610 $ahistory of medicine 610 $amaterial culture 610 $amodern history 610 $asocial history 615 7$aGender studies: men 615 7$aHistory of fashion 615 7$aHistory of medicine 615 7$aMaterial culture 615 7$aModern history to 20th century: c 1700 to c 1900 615 7$aSocial & cultural history 700 $aWithey$b Alun$4auth$0987936 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910597890703321 996 $aConcerning beards$92258901 997 $aUNINA
