Should the European Union be supranational or intergovernmental? Should it promote market-liberalism or regulated capitalism? Should the Commission be Europe's government or its civil service? This 2002 book examines top officials' preferences on these questions through analysis of unique data from 137 interviews. Understanding the forces that shape human preferences is the subject of intense debate. Hooghe demonstrates that the Commission has difficulty shaping its employees' preferences in the fluid multi-institutional context of the European Union. Top officials' preferences are better explained by experiences outside rather than inside the Commission: political party, country, and prior work leave deeper imprints than directorate-general or cabinet. Preferences are also influenced more by internalized values than by self-interested career calculation. Hooghe's findings are surprising, and will challenge a number of common assumptions about the workings and motives of the European Commission. 410 0$aThemes in European governance. 517 3 $aThe European Commission & the Integration of Europe 606 $aEuropean federation 615 0$aEuropean federation. 676 $a341.24/2 700 $aHooghe$b Liesbet$0559301 801 0$bUkCbUP 801 1$bUkCbUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910456005203321 996 $aThe European Commission and the integration of Europe$92474549 997 $aUNINA LEADER 04443oam 22007694a 450 001 996197764503316 005 20240424230107.0 010 $a1-283-28353-0 010 $a9786613283535 010 $a0-87421-667-2 035 $a(CKB)2670000000114155 035 $a(EBL)769755 035 $a(OCoLC)608125438 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000541258 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11391164 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000541258 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10492287 035 $a(PQKB)11231239 035 $a(MdBmJHUP)muse18187 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL3442857 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10500176 035 $a(CaONFJC)MIL328353 035 $a(OCoLC)932313703 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL769755 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr11217483 035 $a(oapen)https://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/59329 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC3442857 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC769755 035 $a(EXLCZ)992670000000114155 100 $a20070503d2007 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurbn#---||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 10$aShoshonean Peoples and the Overland Trail$eFrontiers of the Utah Superintendency of Indian Affairs, 1849?1869 /$fDale L. Three connected works by Morgan are included: First is his classic article on the history of the Utah Superintendency of Indian Affairs. This is followed by a previously unpublished history of early relations among the Western Shoshoni, emigrants, and the government along the California Trail. The book concludes with an important set of government reports and correspondence from the National Archives concerning the Eastern Shoshone and their leader Washakie. Morgan heavily annotated these for serial publication in the Annals of Wyoming. He also wrote a previously unpublished history of early relations among the Western Shoshone, emigrants, and the government along the California Trail. Morgan biographer Richard L. Saunders introduces, edits, and further annotates this collection. His introduction includes an intellectual biography of Morgan that focuses on the place of the anthologized pieces in Morgan's corpus. Gregory E. Smoak, a leading historian of the Shoshone, contributes an ethnohistorical essay as additional context for Morgan's work. 606 $aOverland journeys to the Pacific 606 $aLatter Day Saint churches$xHistory 606 $aShoshoni Indians$xSocial conditions 606 $aShoshoni Indians$xHistory 606 $aShoshoni Indians$xGovernment relations 607 $aCalifornia National Historic Trail 607 $aOregon National Historic Trail 615 0$aOverland journeys to the Pacific. 615 0$aLatter Day Saint churches$xHistory. 615 0$aShoshoni Indians$xSocial conditions. 615 0$aShoshoni Indians$xHistory. 615 0$aShoshoni Indians$xGovernment relations. 676 $a979.2004/974574 700 $aMorgan$b Dale L$g(Dale Lowell),$f1914-1971.$0878954 701 $aSmoak$b Gregory E.$f1962-$0878956 701 $aSaunders$b Richard L.$f1963-$0878955 801 0$bMdBmJHUP 801 1$bMdBmJHUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a996197764503316 996 $aShoshonean Peoples and the Overland Trail$92438659 997 $aUNISA
