The conceptual emphasis here is on the relation between material culture and ethnicity. The author demonstrates that the history of the Sclavenes and the Antes begins only at around 500 AD. He also points to the significance of the archaeological evidence, which suggests that specific artefacts may have been used as identity markers. This evidence also indicates the role of local leaders in building group boundaries and in leading successful raids across the Danube. Because of these military and political developments, Byzantine authors began employing names such as Sclavines and Antes in order to make sense of the process of group identification that was taking place north of the Danube frontier. Slavic ethnicity is therefore shown to be a Byzantine invention. 410 0$aCambridge studies in medieval life and thought ;$v4th ser., 52. 606 $aSlavs$zLower Danube River Region$xHistory 606 $aSlavs$zBalkan Peninsula$xHistory 606 $aSlavs$xEthnic identity 606 $aSlavs$xHistory 606 $aExcavations (Archaeology)$zLower Danube River Region 607 $aLower Danube River Region$xAntiquities, Slavic 615 0$aSlavs$xHistory. 615 0$aSlavs$xHistory. 615 0$aSlavs$xEthnic identity. 615 0$aSlavs$xHistory. 615 0$aExcavations (Archaeology) 676 $a949.6/01 700 $aCurta$b Florin$0443793 801 0$bUkCbUP 801 1$bUkCbUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910455985603321 996 $aThe making of the slavs$91888375 997 $aUNINA
