Analyzing these paradigms through the dual lens of Thomas Mann's novel Doctor Faustus, his self-confessed parable of fascism about the avant-garde composer Adrian Leverknhn, and Theodor W. Adorno's Philosophy of Modern Music, this cultural study draws on aesthetic, sociohistorical, political, and philosophical discourses to conclude that German fascism is at once continuous and discontinuous with the emancipatory ambitions of modernity. Drawing on Adorno's sociohistorical critique of avant-garde music, Cobley connects Leverknhn's radical aesthetic innovation with Hitler's radical reconfiguration of Germany's administrative apparatus and discovers that postmodern processes of fragmentation may well remain complicit with the totalizing tendencies they seek to disrupt. This lucid and sophisticated book demonstrates that Doctor Faustus provides a more astute understanding of German fascism than Mann is usually given credit for. 606 $aNational socialism 606 $aFascism$xPhilosophy 606 $aHolocaust, Jewish (1939-1945)$xCauses 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aNational socialism. 615 0$aFascism$xPhilosophy. 615 0$aHolocaust, Jewish (1939-1945)$xCauses. 676 $a320.53/3/0943 700 $aCobley$b Evelyn$0941970 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910455934403321 996 $aTemptations of Faust$92449310 997 $aUNINA LEADER 01984oam 2200577Ka 450 001 9910712942503321 005 20180920060354.9 024 8 $aGOVPUB-C13-deca2e1ebd670c41c6f96a253a28d566 035 $a(CKB)5470000002498769 035 $a(OCoLC)726773984 035 $a(OCoLC)995470000002498769 035 $a(EXLCZ)995470000002498769 100 $a20110523d1939 ua 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurbn||||||abp 135 $aurbn||||||ada 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 10$aStructural properties of "Pre-Fab" constructions for walls, partitions, and floors sponsored by the Harnischfeger Corporation /$fby Herbert L.
