For the next fifteen years, owing in part to changes unleashed by American expansion, Indian warriors launched devastating attacks across ten Mexican states. Raids and counter-raids claimed thousands of lives, ruined much of northern Mexico's economy, depopulated its countryside, and left man-made "deserts" in place of thriving settlements. Just as important, this vast interethnic war informed and emboldened U.S. arguments in favor of seizing Mexican territory while leaving northern Mexicans too divided, exhausted, and distracted to resist the American invasion and subsequent occupation. Exploring Mexican, American, and Indian sources ranging from diplomatic correspondence and congressional debates to captivity narratives and plains Indians' pictorial calendars, War of a Thousand Deserts recovers the surprising and previously unrecognized ways in which economic, cultural, and political developments within native communities affected nineteenth-century nation-states. In the process this ambitious book offers a rich and often harrowing new narrative of the era when the United States seized half of Mexico's national territory. 410 0$aLamar series in western history. 606 $aMexican War, 1846-1848$xIndians 606 $aMexican War, 1846-1848$zMexican-American Border Region 606 $aMexican War, 1846-1848$zMexico, North 606 $aIndians of North America$xWars$zMexican-American Border Region 606 $aIndians of North America$xWars$zMexico, North 607 $aMexican-American Border Region$xHistory, Military$y19th century 607 $aMexico, North$xHistory, Military$y19th century 607 $aMexican-American Border Region$xEthnic relations$xHistory$y19th century 607 $aMexico, North$xEthnic relations$xHistory$y19th century 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aMexican War, 1846-1848$xIndians. 615 0$aMexican War, 1846-1848 615 0$aMexican War, 1846-1848 615 0$aIndians of North America$xWars 615 0$aIndians of North America$xWars 676 $a972/.100497 700 $aDeLay$b Brian$f1971-$01055864 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910455452303321 996 $aWar of a thousand deserts$92489632 997 $aUNINA
