Henry examines Eliot's roles as an investor in colonial stocks, a parent to emigrant sons, and a reader of colonial literature. She highlights the importance of these contexts to our understanding of both Eliot's fiction and her situation within Victorian culture. Henry argues that Eliot's decision to represent the empire only as it infiltrated the imaginations and domestic lives of her characters illuminates the nature of her Realism. The book also re-examines the assumptions of postcolonial criticism about Victorian fiction and its relation to empire. 410 0$aCambridge studies in nineteenth-century literature and culture ;$v34. 517 3 $aGeorge Eliot & the British Empire 606 $aLiterature and society$zGreat Britain$xHistory$y19th century 606 $aImperialism in literature 606 $aColonies in literature 607 $aGreat Britain$xColonies$xHistory$y19th century 615 0$aLiterature and society$xHistory 615 0$aImperialism in literature. 615 0$aColonies in literature. 676 $a823/.8 700 $aHenry$b Nancy$f1965-$0963815 801 0$bUkCbUP 801 1$bUkCbUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910455338303321 996 $aGeorge Eliot and the British Empire$92473921 997 $aUNINA
