John O'Neill, Distinguished Research Professor of Sociology, York University, Toronto Ireland is going through a period of unprecedented economic and cultural growth and renewal. These changes are due in part to neoliberal policies that have attracted foreign investment. The globalization of Ireland's economy has had major social consequences. Living standards are rising quickly. Emigration has reversed. Catholicism has been secularized, laws on divorce and sexuality have been liberalized. Ireland has become an urban society for the first time. But there is stark inequality and social exclusion; epidemics of depression, alcoholism, and obesity; traditional values and community are declining; and there is deep ambivalence towards immigrants. Ireland's economy is globalized, but is Irish society cosmopolitan? Wealth has increased, but has quality of life improved? The authors explore the developments of the last 15 years, capturing the intensity of the debates that make up the new cosmopolitan multi-cultural Ireland. 606 $aGlobalization$zIreland 607 $aIreland$xEconomic conditions$y1949- 607 $aIreland$xPolitics and government$y1949- 607 $aIreland$xSocial conditions$y1973- 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aGlobalization 676 $a303.48/2417 700 $aKuhling$b Carmen$0904303 701 $aKeohane$b Kieran$0904304 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910455316203321 996 $aCosmopolitan Ireland$92021950 997 $aUNINA LEADER 06568nam 22007335 450 001 9910254185003321 005 20200704195728.0 010 $a94-017-9710-2 024 7 $a10.1007/978-94-017-9710-8 035 $a(CKB)3710000000467449 035 $a(EBL)4092711 035 $a(SSID)ssj0001546611 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)16140950 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0001546611 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)14796205 035 $a(PQKB)10305038 035 $a(DE-He213)978-94-017-9710-8 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC4092711 035 $z(PPN)258857110 035 $a(PPN)188461914 035 $a(EXLCZ)993710000000467449 100 $a20150825d2016 u| 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aTartaglia?s Science of Weights and Mechanics in the Sixteenth Century $eSelections from Quesiti et inventioni diverse: Books VII?VIII /$fby Raffaele Pisano, Danilo Capecchi 205 $a1st ed. 2016. 210 1$aDordrecht :$cSpringer Netherlands :$cImprint: Springer,$d2016. 215 $a1 online resource (513 p.) 225 1 $aHistory of Mechanism and Machine Science,$x1875-3442 ;$v28 300 $aDescription based upon print version of record. 311 $a94-017-9709-9 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references and index. 327 $aPreface by Patricia Radelet-de Grave -- Acknowledgments -- Remarks for the Reader -- Introduction -- PART I ? In the early 16th century mechanics was concerned mainly with what is now called statics and was referred to as the Scientia de ponderibus, generally pursued by two very different approaches. The first was usually referred to as Aristotelian, where the equilibrium of bodies was set as a balance of opposite tendencies to motion. The second, usually referred to as Archimedean, identified statics with centrobarica, the theory of centres of gravity based on symmetry considerations. In between the two traditions the Italian scholar Niccolò Fontana, better known as Tartaglia (1500??1557), wrote the treatise Quesiti et inventioni diverse (1546). This volume consists of three main parts. In the first, a historical excursus regarding Tartaglia?s lifetime, his scientific production and the Scientia de ponderibus in the Arabic-Islamic culture, and from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance, is presented. Secondly, all the propositions of Books VII and VIII, by relating them with the Problemata mechanica by the Aristotelian school and Iordani opvsculvm de ponderositate by Jordanus de Nemore are examined within the history and historical epistemology of science. The last part is relative to the original texts and critical transcriptions into Italian and Latin and an English translation. This work gathers and re-evaluates the current thinking on this subject. It brings together contributions from two distinguished experts in the history and historical epistemology of science, within the fields of physics, mathematics and engineering. It also gives much-needed insight into the subject from historical and scientific points of view. The volume composition makes for absorbing reading for historians, epistemologists, philosophers and scientists. 410 0$aHistory of Mechanism and Machine Science,$x1875-3442 ;$v28 606 $aPhysics 606 $aMathematics 606 $aHistory 606 $aMechanics 606 $aMechanics, Applied 606 $aHistory and Philosophical Foundations of Physics$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/P29000 606 $aHistory of Mathematical Sciences$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/M23009 606 $aTheoretical and Applied Mechanics$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/T15001 615 0$aPhysics. 615 0$aMathematics. 615 0$aHistory. 615 0$aMechanics. 615 0$aMechanics, Applied. 615 14$aHistory and Philosophical Foundations of Physics. 615 24$aHistory of Mathematical Sciences. 615 24$aTheoretical and Applied Mechanics. 676 $a389.109 700 $aPisano$b Raffaele$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$0763799 702 $aCapecchi$b Danilo$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910254185003321 996 $aTartaglia?s Science of Weights and Mechanics in the Sixteenth Century$92511091 997 $aUNINA
