In particular, many believe United Germany is reverting to a xenophobic nationalist stance to deal with the increased pressures of migration unleashed by the raising of the Iron Curtain. O'Brien argues that these fears are exaggerated. He documents in the Federal Republic's policies a longstanding, steadily increasing commitment to the liberal principles of the Basic Law which protect foreigners against hostile German nationalism. The author goes on to criticize the very entrenched liberalism which holds German nationalism in check. He traces among west German political elites the appeal and uses of "technocratic liberalism" - an overzealous protection of Germany's liberal democracy which, paradoxically, prevents minority groups from achieving full rights of political participation. Beyond the Swastika is both unconventional and original. Peter O'Brien resists the widespread alarmist temptation to distort the political influence of German nationalism and instead uncovers sources of inequality in German liberalism which have until now gone unnoticed. 606 $aNationalism$zGermany 606 $aNoncitizens$zGermany 606 $aLiberalism$zGermany 606 $aRacism$zGermany 606 $aXenophobia$zGermany 607 $aGermany$xEthnic relations 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aNationalism 615 0$aNoncitizens 615 0$aLiberalism 615 0$aRacism 615 0$aXenophobia 676 $a305.8/00943 700 $aO'Brien$b Peter$f1960,$0879806 801 0$bFlBoTFG 801 1$bFlBoTFG 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910454561303321 996 $aBeyond the swastika$91964648 997 $aUNINA
