Grounded in Justin Richland's extensive field research on the Hopi Indian Nation of northeastern Arizona-on whose appellate court he now serves as Justice Pro Tempore-this innovative work explains how Hopi notions of tradition and culture shape and are shaped by the processes of Hopi jurisprudence. Like many indigenous legal institutions across North America, the Hopi Tribal Court was created in the image of Anglo-American-style law. But Richland shows that in recent years, Hopi jurists and litigants have called for their courts to develop a jurisprudence that better reflects Hopi culture and traditions. Providing unprecedented insights into the Hopi and English courtroom interactions through which this conflict plays out, Richland argues that tensions between the language of Anglo-style law and Hopi tradition both drive Hopi jurisprudence and make it unique. Ultimately, Richland's analyses of the language of Hopi law offer a fresh approach to the cultural politics that influence indigenous legal and governmental practices worldwide. 410 0$aChicago series in law and society. 606 $aHopi Indians$xLegal status, laws, etc 606 $aHopi law$zArizona 606 $aIndian courts$zUnited States 606 $aIndians of North America$zArizona 607 $aHopi Tribe of Arizona 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aHopi Indians$xLegal status, laws, etc. The local economic impact of a cultural event or facility derives from the money spent by its audience. It can be reliably measured ? once it is understood what exactly is being measured ? only by observing several methodological ground rules: use of an ad hoc local economic model; exclusion of certain kinds of expenditure; calculation of costs. After estimation, the findings require that caution be exercised when using them for justifying local government subsidies for a cultural activity. This note sets out the reasons underlying this attitude. 606 $aEconomics 606 $aCultural studies 606 $alocal authorities 606 $asystem 606 $acultural institution 606 $acultural event 606 $aeconomic impact 606 $adispositif 606 $aéquipement culturel 606 $aévénement culturel 606 $aimpact économique 606 $acollectivités territoriales 610 $asystem 610 $acultural event 610 $aeconomic impact 610 $alocal authorities 610 $acultural institution 615 4$aEconomics 615 4$aCultural studies 615 4$alocal authorities 615 4$asystem 615 4$acultural institution 615 4$acultural event 615 4$aeconomic impact 615 4$adispositif 615 4$aéquipement culturel 615 4$aévénement culturel 615 4$aimpact économique 615 4$acollectivités territoriales 700 $aNicolas$b Yann$01364207 701 $aChantepie$b Philippe$01281727 801 0$bFR-FrMaCLE 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910131351303321 996 $aLes Premiers Principes de l?analyse d?impact économique local d?une activité culturelle$93385338 997 $aUNINA
