Both unhappily married-Marie had also fled the aftermath of her failed affair with the king-the sisters chose to leave their husbands for life on the road, a life quite rare for women of their day. Through their writings, the Mancinis sought to rehabilitate their reputations and reclaim the right to define their public images themselves, rather than leave the stories of their lives to the intrigues of the court-and to their disgruntled ex-husbands. First translated in 1676 and 1678 and credited largely to male redactors, the two memoirs reemerge here in an accessible English translation that chronicles the beginnings of women's rights to personal independence within the confines of an otherwise circumscribed early modern aristocratic society. 410 0$aOther voice in early modern Europe. 606 $aBIOGRAPHY & AUTOBIOGRAPHY / General$2bisacsh 607 $aFrance$xHistory$yLouis XIV, 1643-1715$vSources 607 $aFrance$xCourt and courtiers$vDiaries 608 $aElectronic books. 615 7$aBIOGRAPHY & AUTOBIOGRAPHY / General. 676 $a944/.0330922 700 $aMancini$b Marie, $4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$0148267 701 $aNelson$b Sarah$f1949-$0964676 701 2$aMazarin$b Hortense Mancini$cduchesse de,$f1646-1699.$0449536 701 2$aMancini$b Maria$f1639-1715.$0148267 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910454000303321 996 $aMemoirs$92188663 997 $aUNINA
