Der Grund ist eng mit der Echtheitsfrage der Gedichte verknüpft: Während die 60 Gedichte lange als authentische Dichtung des archaischen Lyrikers Anakreon gelesen wurden, gelten sie heute aus sprachlich-stilistischen Gründen als kaiserzeitliche Nachahmungen anakreontischer Lyrik, die von verschiedenen Autoren zwischen dem 1. und 6. Jahrhundert n.Chr. verfasst wurden.
