As China and Japan entered the global capitalist system of nation states, the Chinese and Japanese regimes implemented a number of reforms, which resulted in transformations that affected everyday experience. In the face of imperialism and the perceived threat of being split up, the Meiji and late Qing governments radically reoriented policies in order to become wealthy and powerful in the global arena. People not only began to experience time and space in new ways, but elites also were increasingly exposed to Western theories of history and concepts of nationhood, which became dominant. These changes contributed to the production of new types of historical consciousness and collective identity. The essays in this volume each provide a perspective on the complex ways in which imagining national and regional identity in East Asia were and continue to be enmeshed with visions of time and history. This book should be of interest to all those who are interested in nationalism, modernity in China and Japan, global capitalism and the politics of time. 410 0$aLeiden series in comparative historiography ;$vv. 7. 606 $aHistoriography$xPolitical aspects$zChina 606 $aHistoriography$xPolitical aspects$zJapan 606 $aTime$xPolitical aspects$zChina 606 $aTime$xPolitical aspects$zJapan 606 $aNationalism$zChina 606 $aNationalism$zJapan 607 $aChina$xHistoriography 607 $aJapan$xHistoriography 607 $aChina$xIntellectual life$y20th century 607 $aJapan$xIntellectual life$y20th century 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aHistoriography$xPolitical aspects 615 0$aHistoriography$xPolitical aspects 615 0$aTime$xPolitical aspects 615 0$aTime$xPolitical aspects 615 0$aNationalism 615 0$aNationalism 676 $a951.0072 701 $aMurthy$b Viren$0897337 701 $aSchneider$b Axel$0970924 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910453658203321 996 $aThe challenge of linear time$92206842 997 $aUNINA LEADER 01720nas 2200541-a 450 001 996215626103316 005 20240413022132.0 011 $a0889-594X 035 $a(CKB)110978966562030 035 $a(CONSER)---89641680- 035 $a(EXLCZ)99110978966562030 100 $a19880706b19892000 --- a 101 0 $aeng 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 00$aSouthern folklore 210 $aLexington, Ky. $cFor Western Kentucky University by the University Press of Kentucky$d©1989-©2001 215 $a1 online resource 300 $aRefereed/Peer-reviewed 300 $aTitle from cover. 311 08$aPrint version: Southern folklore. 0899-594X (DLC) 89641680 (OCoLC)18176287 531 0 $aSouth. folk. 606 $aFolklore$vPeriodicals 606 $aFolklore$zSouthern States$vPeriodicals 606 $aManners and customs$vPeriodicals 606 $aFolklore$vPériodiques 606 $aFolklore$zÉtats-Unis (Sud)$vPériodiques 606 $aFolklore$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00930306 606 $aManners and customs$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01007815 607 $aSouthern States$xSocial life and customs$vPeriodicals 607 $aSouthern States$2fast 608 $aPeriodicals.$2fast 608 $aPeriodicals.$2lcgft 615 0$aFolklore 615 0$aFolklore 615 0$aManners and customs 615 6$aFolklore 615 6$aFolklore 615 7$aFolklore. 615 7$aManners and customs. 676 $a398/.05 712 02$aWestern Kentucky University. 906 $aJOURNAL 912 $a996215626103316 920 $aexl_impl conversion 996 $aSouthern folklore$92080193 997 $aUNISA
