This book surveys recent developments in the analysis of wave propagation problems. The topics covered include aspects of the forward problem and problems in inverse problems, as well as applications in the earth sciences. Wave propagation problems are ubiquitous in environmental applications such as seismic analysis, acoustic and electromagnetic scattering. The design of efficient numerical methods for the forward problem, in which the scattered field is computed from known geometric configurations is very challenging due to the multiscale nature of the problems. Even more challenging are inverse problems where material parameters and configurations have to be determined from measurements in conjunction with the forward problem. This book contains review articles covering several state-of-the-art numerical methods for both forward and inverse problems. This collection of survey articles focusses on the efficient computation of wave propagation and scattering is a core problem in numerical mathematics, which is currently of great research interest and is central to many applications in energy and the environment. Two generic applications which resonate strongly with the central aims of the Radon Special Semester 2011 are forward wave propagation in heterogeneous media and seismic inversion for subsurface imaging. As an example of the first application, modelling of absorption and scattering of radiation by clouds, aerosol and precipitation is used as a tool for interpretation of (e.g.) solar, infrared and radar measurements, and as a component in larger weather/climate prediction models in numerical weather forecasting. As an example of the second application, inverse problems in wave propagation in heterogeneous media arise in the problem of imaging the subsurface below land or marine deposits. The book records the achievements of Workshop 3 "Wave Propagation and Scattering, Inverse Problems and Applications in Energy and the Environment". It brings together key numerical mathematicians whose interest is in the analysis and computation of wave propagation and scattering problems, and in inverse problems, together with practitioners from engineering and industry whose interest is in the applications of these core problems. 410 0$aRadon Series on Computational and Applied Mathematics 606 $aRadio wave propagation 606 $aRadio waves$xDiffraction 606 $aRadio waves$xScattering 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aRadio wave propagation. 615 0$aRadio waves$xDiffraction. 615 0$aRadio waves$xScattering. 676 $a621.3841/10151535 686 $aUF 5000$2rvk 701 $aGraham$b Ivan G$01056670 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910453366303321 996 $aDirect and inverse problems in wave propagation and applications$92491198 997 $aUNINA LEADER 05297oam 2200685I 450 001 9910462675603321 005 20200520144314.0 010 $a0-203-03827-4 010 $a1-283-84041-3 010 $a1-136-15386-1 024 7 $a10.4324/9780203038277 035 $a(CKB)2670000000298717 035 $a(EBL)1074806 035 $a(OCoLC)823379846 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000783365 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11431283 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000783365 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10752445 035 $a(PQKB)10288763 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC1074806 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL1074806 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10630254 035 $a(CaONFJC)MIL415291 035 $a(OCoLC)820073312 035 $a(EXLCZ)992670000000298717 100 $a20180706e20111998 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aGods, priests and men $estudies in the religion of pharaonic Egypt /$fby Aylward M. Blackman's knowledge of Egyptian religion was unrivalled. He was best known for his series of studies on Egyptian religion which have long been regarded as essential reading in the subject, and which forms the content of the present collection. Unusually, Blackman did not publish his writings in book form, but preferred to place them in a wide range of publications that are extremely difficult to obtain.
