Why value autonomy? -- 2. Individuality -- 3. Alienation, authenticity, and affect -- 4. Misuse and abuse: perfectionism and preferences -- 5. Misuse and abuse: punishment and privacy -- 6. Applications -- 7. Final justifications. 330 $aSince Mill's seminal work On Liberty, philosophers and political theorists have accepted that we should respect the decisions of individual agents when those decisions affect no one other than themselves. Indeed, to respect autonomy is often understood to be the chief way to bear witness to the intrinsic value of persons. In this book, Sarah Conly rejects the idea of autonomy as inviolable. Drawing on sources from behavioural economics and social psychology, she argues that we are so often irrational in making our decisions that our autonomous choices often undercut the achievement of our own goals. Thus in many cases it would advance our goals more effectively if government were to prevent us from acting in accordance with our decisions. Her argument challenges widely held views of moral agency, democratic values and the public/private distinction, and will interest readers in ethics, political philosophy, political theory and philosophy of law. 606 $aDecision making$xPolitical aspects 606 $aDecision making$xPhilosophy 606 $aPaternalism 606 $aAutonomy (Philosophy) 606 $aChoice (Psychology) 615 0$aDecision making$xPolitical aspects. 615 0$aDecision making$xPhilosophy. 615 0$aPaternalism. 615 0$aAutonomy (Philosophy) 615 0$aChoice (Psychology) 676 $a320.01 700 $aConly$b Sarah$0479541 801 0$bUkCbUP 801 1$bUkCbUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910453001703321 996 $aAgainst autonomy$9259925 997 $aUNINA LEADER 01290cam0-22004331i-450 001 990004188600403321 005 20240419173634.0 035 $a000418860 035 $aFED01000418860 035 $a(Aleph)000418860FED01 100 $a19990604d1980----km-y0itay50------ba 101 0 $aita 102 $aIT 105 $ay-------001yy 200 1 $a<>cittą antica$eguida storica e critica$ga cura di Carmine Ampolo 210 $aBari$cLaterza$d1980 215 $aXLIII, 284 p.$d18 cm 225 1 $aUniversale Laterza$v575 610 0 $aMondo antico$aGuida 676 $a320.854 676 $a321.8$v23$zita 702 1$aAmpolo,$bCarmine$f<1947- > 801 0$aIT$bUNINA$gRICA$2UNIMARC 901 $aBK 912 $a990004188600403321 952 $aFONDO PROFESSOR ANTONIO GUARINO XXI A 158$bG/2052$fFGBG 952 $aFIL CLASS. 131(5752)$bFil class.8918$fFLFBC 952 $aAmir. 406$bddr$fDDR 952 $a321.8 AMP 1$bANT.
