Maier ci mostra che c?è un altro modo di raccontare questa storia che non si risolva nel conflitto tra democrazia e dittatura, emancipazione e oppressione, fascismo e comunismo o anche soltanto tra liberali e conservatori, destra e sinistra, moderati ed estremisti. I protagonisti sono attori collettivi che possiedono diverse fonti di potere e di influenza pubblica e che cercano di massimizzare il loro ruolo storico. E quattro di questi sono quelli che sembrano aver avuto il peso maggiore. Due più ancorati alle configurazioni politiche tradizionali: lo stato con un ampio progetto di trasformazione sul piano delle istituzioni, così come su quello della società civile e persino della mentalità; e l?impero estrattivo, ovvero un?organizzazione non legata tanto all?espansione territoriale fine a se stessa quanto alla creazione di un sistema di dominio finalizzato allo sfruttamento delle risorse naturali. E due invece più «volatili»: le comunità di governance e le reti di capitali, entrambe strutture transnazionali che mirano a forme di controllo più debole ma non meno egemonico, che garantisca influenza e libertà assoluta dei movimenti economici e finanziari. Quella di Maier è una prospettiva bilanciata e di ampio respiro, di cui c?è estremo bisogno in tempi di profonda disillusione democratica, che rivelandoci come l?equilibrio politico si sia sempre retto su una fragile tensione di forze può aiutarci a illuminare di una luce meno fosca il presente.
