He held that everything possesses a natural basis and that everything natural has an ideal development. In this one-volume edition of his early work, The Life of Reason (originally published 1905-6), Santayana argues that rational life is embodied in various ideal forms, including religion, and that religion may be embodied in reason. However, this is not to say that religion is grounded in science; rather, religion is poetic, a rendering of natural events in a dramatic form. Hence, to take so-called religious truths as literal claims is preposterous. 410 0$aWorks of George Santayana 606 $aPhilosophy 606 $aPhilosophers$zUnited States 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aPhilosophy. 615 0$aPhilosophers 676 $a191 700 $aSantayana$b George$f1863-1952.$0191013 701 $aWokeck$b Marianne Sophia$0912555 701 $aColeman$b Martin A$0907671 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910452674503321 996 $aThe life of reason, or, The phases of human progress$92460203 997 $aUNINA
