Distinguished philosopher John Cooper traces how, for many ancient thinkers, philosophy was not just to be studied or even used to solve particular practical problems. Rather, philosophy--not just ethics but even logic and physical theory--was literally to be lived. Yet there was great disagreement about how to live philosophically: philosophy was not one but many, mutually opposed, ways of life. Examining this tradition from its establishment by Socrates in the fifth century BCE through Plotinus in the third century CE and the eclipse of pagan philosophy by Christianity, Pursuits of Wisdom examines six central philosophies of living--Socratic, Aristotelian, Stoic, Epicurean, Skeptic, and the Platonist life of late antiquity. The book describes the shared assumptions that allowed these thinkers to conceive of their philosophies as ways of life, as well as the distinctive ideas that led them to widely different conclusions about the best human life. Clearing up many common misperceptions and simplifications, Cooper explains in detail the Socratic devotion to philosophical discussion about human nature, human life, and human good; the Aristotelian focus on the true place of humans within the total system of the natural world; the Stoic commitment to dutifully accepting Zeus's plans; the Epicurean pursuit of pleasure through tranquil activities that exercise perception, thought, and feeling; the Skeptical eschewal of all critical reasoning in forming their beliefs; and, finally, the late Platonist emphasis on spiritual concerns and the eternal realm of Being. Pursuits of Wisdom is essential reading for anyone interested in understanding what the great philosophers of antiquity thought was the true purpose of philosophy--and of life. 606 $aPhilosophy, Ancient 606 $aWisdom 606 $aConduct of life 608 $aElectronic books. 610 $aAristotelian life. 610 $aAristotle. 610 $aEpicurean life. 610 $aEpicurus. 610 $aHadot. 610 $aPlato. 610 $aPlatonism. 610 $aPlatonist life. 610 $aPlotinus. 610 $aPyrrhonian skepticism. 610 $aSextus Empiricus. 610 $aSkeptic life. 610 $aSocrates. 610 $aSocratic knowledge. 610 $aSocratic life. 610 $aStoic life. 610 $aStoicism. 610 $aStoics. 610 $aancient philosophy. 610 $abiology. 610 $acontemplative life. 610 $adialectic. 610 $aethics. 610 $ahappiness. 610 $ahuman life. 610 $alogic knowledge. 610 $alogic. 610 $ametaphysics. 610 $amoral philosophy. 610 $aphysical theory. 610 $askeptics. 610 $avirtues. 610 $awisdom. 615 0$aPhilosophy, Ancient. 615 0$aWisdom. 615 0$aConduct of life. 676 $a180 700 $aCooper$b John M$g(John Madison),$f1939-$01053984 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910452086703321 996 $aPursuits of wisdom$92489661 997 $aUNINA LEADER 03114nam 22009133a 450 001 9910346665003321 005 20250203235429.0 010 $a9783039211395 010 $a3039211390 024 8 $a10.3390/books978-3-03921-139-5 035 $a(CKB)4920000000095017 035 $a(oapen)https://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/62728 035 $a(ScCtBLL)a5a606bd-4428-4ce1-8bc1-e695f343307a 035 $a(OCoLC)1126207717 035 $a(oapen)doab62728 035 $a(EXLCZ)994920000000095017 100 $a20250203i20192019 uu 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurmn|---annan 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 00$aWine and Vine Components and Health$fNorbert Latruffe, Jean-Pierre Rifler 210 $cMDPI - Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute$d2019 210 1$aBasel, Switzerland :$cMDPI,$d2019. 215 $a1 electronic resource (154 p.) 311 08$a9783039211388 311 08$a3039211382 330 $aWhile there is a tremendous literature on the topic of wine and health ranging back to the days of Hippocrates, it is considered that there is an unlimited variety of wine, allowing for the association of senses, nutrition, and hedonism. The history of vine and wine has lasted for at least 7000 years. Vitis represent adaptable plants, and thanks to the large variety of strains, wine is an alchemical mix with unique properties, a rich and original composition in terms of polyphenols, and well known antioxidants. This explains why wine and health are closely linked to nutrition. 610 $apolyphenols 610 $ared wine 610 $aapigenin 610 $atyrosol 610 $aneurotrophic effects 610 $aneuronal differentiation 610 $aOkinawa diet 610 $acolorectal 610 $aantioxidant capacity 610 $aolive oil 610 $avine 610 $aalcohol 610 $aantioxidant 610 $aelectrochemical technology 610 $aMediterranean diet 610 $aallergy 610 $acardiovascular protection 610 $aN2a murine neuronal cells 610 $acancers 610 $adementia 610 $awine 610 $aresveratrol derivatives 610 $aRW 610 $asubstituents phenyl rings 610 $aefficacy towards diseases 610 $agrape pomace 610 $ametabolic disease 610 $aAlzheimer 610 $abiological targets 610 $awine flavonoids 610 $ametabolites characterization 610 $adiet 610 $ahydroxytyrosol 610 $ahormesis 610 $aresveratrol 610 $acardiovascular disease 610 $anrf2 610 $ahealth 610 $asynthesis strategies 610 $aEVOO 610 $acancer 610 $ahypertension 700 $aLatruffe$b Norbert$063460 702 $aRifler$b Jean-Pierre 801 0$bScCtBLL 801 1$bScCtBLL 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910346665003321 996 $aWine and Vine Components and Health$94320405 997 $aUNINA
