They propose a new national holiday-Deliberation Day-for each presidential election year. On this day people throughout the country will meet in public spaces and engage in structured debates about issues that divide the candidates in the upcoming presidential election. Deliberation Day is a bold new proposal, but it builds on a host of smaller experiments. Over the past decade, Fishkin has initiated Deliberative Polling events in the United States and elsewhere that bring random and representative samples of voters together for discussion of key political issues. In these events, participants greatly increase their understanding of the issues and often change their minds on the best course of action. Deliberation Day is not merely a novel idea but a feasible reform. Ackerman and Fishkin consider the economic, organizational, and political questions raised by their proposal and explore its relationship to the larger ideals of liberal democracy. 606 $aPolitical participation$zUnited States 606 $aDemocracy$zUnited States 606 $aElections$zUnited States 606 $aLegitimacy of governments$zUnited States 606 $aForums (Discussion and debate) 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aPolitical participation 615 0$aDemocracy 615 0$aElections 615 0$aLegitimacy of governments 615 0$aForums (Discussion and debate) 676 $a324.6/0973 686 $aMG 70075$2rvk 700 $aAckerman$b Bruce A$0123194 701 $aFishkin$b James S$0555644 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910451988803321 996 $aDeliberation Day$92487521 997 $aUNINA LEADER 01842nam 2200421Ia 450 001 996395672703316 005 20221108093800.0 035 $a(CKB)4330000000325327 035 $a(EEBO)2240864748 035 $a(UnM)99900494 035 $a(EXLCZ)994330000000325327 100 $a19990115d1623 uy | 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurbn||||a|bb| 200 10$aBrowne. 1623$b[electronic resource] $eA new almanacke and prognostication, for the yeare of our Lord God, 1623. being the third after leape-yeare.
