Introduction -- 2. Nature and the State of Nature -- 3. Commerce, Capitalism and the Common Law -- 4. Legal Regulation and Environmental Values -- 5. The Changing Face of Environmental Law 330 8 $aLegal regulation of the environment is often construed as a collection of legislated responses to the problems of modern living. Treated as such,'environmental law' refers not to a body of distinctive juristic ideas (such as one might find in contract law or tort) but to a body of black-letter rules out of which a distinct jurisprudence might grow. This book challenges the accepted view by arguing that environmental law must be seen not as a mere instrument of social policy, but as a historical product of surprising antiquity and considerable sophistication. Environmental law, it is argued, is underpinned by a series of tenets concerning the relationship of human beings to the natural world, through the acquisition and use of property. By tracing these ideas to their roots in the political philosophy of the seventeenth century, and their reception into the early law of nuisance, this book seeks to overturn the perception that environmental law's philosophical significance is confined to questions about the extent to which a state should pursue collective well-being and public health through deliberate manipulation and restriction of private property rights. Through a close re-examination of both early and modern statutes and cases, this book concludes that, far from being intelligible in exclusively instrumental terms, environmental law must be understood as the product of sustained reflection upon fundamental moral questions concerning the relationship between property, rights and nature 606 $aEnvironmental law$xPhilosophy 606 $aEnvironmental law$zGreat Britain 606 $2Environment law 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aEnvironmental law$xPhilosophy. 615 0$aEnvironmental law 676 $a344.4104/6 700 $aCoyle$b Sean$0967249 702 $aMorrow$b Karen$f1969- 801 0$bUtOrBLW 801 1$bUtOrBLW 801 2$bUkLoBP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910451323603321 996 $aThe philosophical foundations of environmental law$92470644 997 $aUNINA LEADER 03013oam 2200613I 450 001 9910786690403321 005 20230803035011.0 010 $a1-317-88396-9 010 $a1-138-17896-9 010 $a1-315-84080-4 010 $a1-317-88397-7 024 7 $a10.4324/9781315840802 035 $a(CKB)3710000000126704 035 $a(EBL)1710553 035 $a(SSID)ssj0001228730 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)12475793 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0001228730 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)11178799 035 $a(PQKB)11711899 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC1710553 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL1710553 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10884050 035 $a(CaONFJC)MIL618213 035 $a(OCoLC)881417407 035 $a(OCoLC)897463284 035 $a(EXLCZ)993710000000126704 100 $a20180706e20132002 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 14$aThe Welsh princes $ethe native rulers of Wales 1063-1283 /$fRoger Turvey 210 1$aLondon ;$aNew York :$cRoutledge,$d2013. 215 $a1 online resource (248 p.) 225 1 $aMedieval World 300 $a"First published 2002 by Pearson Education Limited"--T.p. verso. 311 $a1-306-86962-5 311 $a0-582-30811-9 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references and index. 327 $aCover; Half Title; Title Page; Copyright Page; Table of Contents; Editor's Preface; Preface; Abbreviations; Genealogical Tables and Maps; Introduction: Outlines and Sources; chapter one Family, Descent and Inheritance: The Princes and Their Principalities; chapter two Conflict or Coexistence: Marchia Wallie and Pura Wallia; chapter three Challenge and Response: English Kings and Welsh Princes; chapter four The Governance of Native Wales: The Princes as Rulers; chapter five Conquest and Consolidation: The Princes as Warriors; chapter six Culture and Religion: The Princes as Patrons 327 $achapter seven Conclusion: The Princes After ConquestGeneral Bibliography; Index 330 $aThe Welsh princes were one of the most important ruling elites in medieval western Europe. This volume examines their behaviour, influence and power in a period when the Welsh were struggling to maintain their independence and identity in the face of Anglo-Norman settlement. From the mid-eleventh century to the end of the thirteenth, Wales was profoundly transformed by conquest and foreign 'colonial' settlement. Massive changes took place in the political, economic, social and religious spheres and Welsh culture was significantly affected. Roger Turvey looks at this transformation, its impact 410 0$aMedieval world. 607 $aWales$xHistory$y1063-1284 607 $aWales$xKings and rulers$vBiography 676 $a942.902 700 $aTurvey$b Roger.$01161399 801 0$bFlBoTFG 801 1$bFlBoTFG 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910786690403321 996 $aThe Welsh princes$93806520 997 $aUNINA
