These disturbances triggered the collapse of royal authority across the British Isles. This volume explores the political and religious culture in the Scottish capital from the reign of James VI and I to the Cromwellian occupation. It examines for the first time the importance of Edinburgh to the formation of the Scottish opposition movement and to the establishment of the revolutionary Covenanting regime. Although the primary focus is the Scottish capital, an explicitly British perspective is maintained. This is a wide-ranging study that engages in debates about early modern urban culture, the problem of multiple monarchy and the issue of post-Reformation religious radicalism. 410 0$aThe Northern World ;$v23. 517 3 $aEdinburgh, 1617-53 606 $aIntellectual life 606 $aPolitics and government 607 $aEdinburgh (Scotland)$xHistory$y17th century 607 $aEdinburgh (Scotland)$xIntellectual life$y17th century 607 $aGreat Britain$xHistory$yCivil War, 1642-1649 607 $aScotland$xHistory$yCharles I, 1625-1649 607 $aScotland$xHistory$yJames VI, 1567-1625 607 $aScotland$xPolitics and government$y17th century 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aIntellectual life. 615 0$aPolitics and government. 676 $a941.3/406 700 $aStewart$b Laura$01075111 801 0$bNL-LeKB 801 1$bNL-LeKB 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910451205003321 996 $aUrban Politics and the British Civil Wars$92583885 997 $aUNINA
