It questions the meaning of democratization for women and their relationship to national sovereignty within the new Indonesian state, and discusses women's organizations and their activities; women's social and economic roles; and the different cultural, regional and ethnic attitudes towards women, while showing the failure of political change to fully address women's gender interests and needs. The author argues that both the role of nationalism in defining gender identity and the role of gender in defining national identity need equal recognition. 410 0$aASAA women in Asia series. 606 $aWomen$zIndonesia$xHistory$y20th century 606 $aFeminism$zIndonesia$xHistory$y20th century 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aWomen$xHistory 615 0$aFeminism$xHistory 676 $a305.4/09598 686 $a15.75$2bcl 700 $aMartyn$b Elizabeth$0925888 801 0$bFlBoTFG 801 1$bFlBoTFG 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910450990503321 996 $aThe Women's Movement in Postcolonial Indonesia$92078842 997 $aUNINA
