In anticipation of another conflict, military planners and civilian thinkers struggled after 1918 with the painful implications of World War I. Given its scope, the wholesale mobilisation of civilian populations and the targets of civilians via blockades and strategic bombing, many observers regarded this titanic conflict as a 'total war'. They also concluded that any future conflict would bear the same hallmarks; and they planned accordingly. The essays in this collection, the fourth in a series on the problem of total war, examine the inter-war period. They explore the consequences of World War I, the intellectual efforts to analyse this conflict's military significance, the attempts to plan for another general war and several episodes in the 1930s that portended the war that erupted in 1939. 410 0$aPublications of the German Historical Institute. 606 $aWorld War, 1914-1918$xInfluence$vCongresses 606 $aMilitary art and science$xHistory$y20th century$vCongresses 606 $aWorld War, 1939-1945$xDiplomatic history$vCongresses 606 $aWar and society$xHistory$y20th century 606 $aTotal war 607 $aEurope$xForeign relations$y1918-1945$vCongresses 607 $aUnited States$xForeign relations$y1933-1945$vCongresses 607 $aEast Asia$xForeign relations$vCongresses 615 0$aWorld War, 1914-1918$xInfluence 615 0$aMilitary art and science$xHistory 615 0$aWorld War, 1939-1945$xDiplomatic history 615 0$aWar and society$xHistory 615 0$aTotal war. 676 $a940.3 702 $aChickering$b Roger$f1942- 702 $aFo?rster$b Stig 801 0$bUkCbUP 801 1$bUkCbUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910450263003321 996 $aThe shadows of total war$91905606 997 $aUNINA
