It gives the State the power to curtail the liberty of offenders for the rest of their lives. In many jurisdictions life imprisonment is the ultimate sanction for the most serious crimes. It is frequently touted as an alternative to the death penalty. At the same time, life imprisonment is often imposed as a preventive measure, where the offence alone does not justify using the ultimate sanction in the penal arsenal. The complexity of life imprisonment is frequently overlooked. Often it is assumed that it is not as drastic as it sounds, as it will not be enforced for the whole life of the offender. There may also be a reluctance to subject life imprisonment to close scrutiny, lest its perceived suitability as an alternative to the death penalty be undermined. This book tackles the complexity of life imprisonment head on by describing how various forms of it are imposed and implemented in the United States of America, in England and Wales and in Germany, as well as in the emerging international system of criminal justice. From this basis it examines the justifications advanced for life imprisonment and the modifications that have resulted in individual jurisdictions in response to criticisms of its imposition and implementation. At the same time, the book develops a more general critique of life imprisonment. It evaluates it against constitutional human rights standards that have been developed in many jurisdictions to judge the acceptability of punishment generally. It concludes that some current practices in both the imposition and implementation of life imprisonment clearly are fundamentally unacceptable, but that questions remain, even about carefully implemented life sentences imposed for the most serious crimes. The jurisprudential analysis provides the basis for a major re-evaluation of life imprisonment and raises doubts about the unquestioning acceptance of this ultimate penalty. 517 3 $aIn National and International Law 606 $aComparison of law 606 $aInternational criminal law 606 $aLife imprisonment 606 $aPenitentiary law 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aComparison of law. 615 0$aInternational criminal law. 615 0$aLife imprisonment. 615 0$aPenitentiary law. 676 $a345/.0772 700 $aZysk$b Kenneth G.$0330434 801 0$bNL-LeKB 801 1$bNL-LeKB 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910450145603321 996 $aTaking Life Imprisonment Seriously$92462718 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02369nam 2200601 450 001 9910797740903321 005 20230126213642.0 010 $a0-8032-8503-5 010 $a0-8032-8505-1 035 $a(CKB)3710000000517181 035 $a(EBL)4095864 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC4094934 035 $a(OCoLC)929857752 035 $a(MdBmJHUP)muse46609 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC4095864 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL4094934 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr11121094 035 $a(CaONFJC)MIL869901 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL4095864 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr11121101 035 $a(OCoLC)930018803 035 $a(EXLCZ)993710000000517181 100 $a20151211h20162016 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurun|---||||| 181 $2rdacontent 182 $2rdamedia 183 $2rdacarrier 200 10$aMoments of impact $einjury, racialized memory, and reconciliation in college football /$fJaime Schultz 210 1$aLincoln, Nebraska ;$aLondon, [England] :$cUniversity of Nebraska Press,$d2016. 210 4$dİ2016 215 $a1 online resource (215 p.) 300 $aDescription based upon print version of record. 311 $a0-8032-4578-5 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references and index. 327 $aIntroduction: telling exceptional tales -- Resurrecting Jack Trice : life, death, and the campaign for Jack Trice Stadium -- Iowa State University's commemorative balancing act : Jack Trice Stadium and Carrie Chapman Catt Hall, 1995-97 -- Ozzie Simmons, Floyd of Rosedale, and a tale of two governors -- Photographic memory and the Johnny Bright incident of 1951 -- Afterword: coming to terms with the past. 606 $aAfrican American football players$zIowa$xHistory$y20th century 606 $aCollective memory$xSocial aspects$zIowa 606 $aMemorialization$xSocial aspects$zIowa 606 $aRacism in sports$zUnited States$xHistory$y20th century 615 0$aAfrican American football players$xHistory 615 0$aCollective memory$xSocial aspects 615 0$aMemorialization$xSocial aspects 615 0$aRacism in sports$xHistory 676 $a796.332/6309777 700 $aSchultz$b Jaime$01577219 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910797740903321 996 $aMoments of impact$93858008 997 $aUNINA
