The modern state governs in the name of a people defined in ethnic and national terms. Democratic participation, equality before the law and protection from arbitrary violence were offered only to the ethnic group in a privileged relationship with the emerging nation-state. Depending on circumstances, the dynamics of exclusion took on different forms. Where nation building was 'successful', immigrants and 'ethnic minorities' are excluded from full participation; they risk being targets of xenophobia and racism. In weaker states, political closure proceeded along ethnic, rather than national lines and leads to corresponding forms of conflict and violence. In chapters on Mexico, Iraq and Switzerland, Wimmer provides extended case studies that support and contextualise this argument. 517 3 $aNationalist Exclusion & Ethnic Conflict 606 $aNation-state 606 $aNationalism 606 $aEthnic groups$xPolitical activity 606 $aImmigrants$xPolitical activity 606 $aMinorities$xPolitical activity 615 0$aNation-state. 615 0$aNationalism. 615 0$aEthnic groups$xPolitical activity. 615 0$aImmigrants$xPolitical activity. 615 0$aMinorities$xPolitical activity. 676 $a320.54 700 $aWimmer$b Andreas$0562014 801 0$bUkCbUP 801 1$bUkCbUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910450014203321 996 $aNationalist exclusion and ethnic conflict$9941437 997 $aUNINA
