This book aims to build a bridge between these contradictory results by synthesising principal-agent theory, stewardship theory, and managerial discretion theory into a new empirically-validated model. Using a representative sample of 'double-blind' interviews with managers of 467 firms in China and applying partial least squares path modelling (PLS), the study identifies a potential cause of the discretion puzzle: the failure of the extant literature to account for granularity in the way that managers use their discretion. This generates far-reaching implications for theoretical and empirical research as well as practical recommendations for managing managers in multinationals and Chinese companies. 410 0$aContributions to Management Science,$x1431-1941 606 $aLeadership 606 $aGlobalization 606 $aMarkets 606 $aOrganization 606 $aPlanning 606 $aPersonnel management 606 $aBusiness Strategy/Leadership$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/515010 606 $aEmerging Markets/Globalization$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/525010 606 $aOrganization$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/516000 606 $aHuman Resource Management$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/517000 615 0$aLeadership. 615 0$aGlobalization. 615 0$aMarkets. 615 0$aOrganization. 615 0$aPlanning. 615 0$aPersonnel management. 615 14$aBusiness Strategy/Leadership. 615 24$aEmerging Markets/Globalization. 615 24$aOrganization. 615 24$aHuman Resource Management. 676 $a331.2 676 $a331.21 700 $aWülferth$b Hagen$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$01062671 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910438252803321 996 $aManagerial Discretion and Performance in China$92527524 997 $aUNINA
