It presents Nancy Cartwright and Amartya Sen?s ideas as cases of this restoration and sees Aristotle as an influence on their thought. It looks at how we can use these ideas to develop a valuable understanding of practical reason for solving concrete problems in science and society. Cartwright?s capacities are real causes of events. Sen?s capabilities are the human person?s freedoms or possibilities. They relate these concepts to Aristotelian concepts. This suggests that these concepts can be combined. Sen?s capabilities are Cartwright?s capacities in the human realm; capabilities are real causes of events in economic life. Institutions allow us to deliberate on and guide our decisions about capabilities, through the use of practical reason. Institutions thus embody practical reason and infuse certain predictability into economic action. The book presents a case study: the UNDP?s HDI. 410 0$aSpringerBriefs in Philosophy,$x2211-4548 606 $aEconomic history 606 $aEthics 606 $aSocial sciences 606 $aEpistemology 606 $aHistory of Economic Thought/Methodology$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/W28000 606 $aEthics$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/E14000 606 $aMethodology of the Social Sciences$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/X17000 606 $aEpistemology$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/E13000 615 0$aEconomic history. 615 0$aEthics. 615 0$aSocial sciences. 615 0$aEpistemology. 615 14$aHistory of Economic Thought/Methodology. 615 24$aEthics. 615 24$aMethodology of the Social Sciences. 615 24$aEpistemology. 676 $a330.01 700 $aCrespo$b Ricardo F$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$0848509 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910438081003321 996 $aTheoretical and Practical Reason in Economics$92512028 997 $aUNINA
