Our approach is mathematical in nature with a strong focus on the underlying mathematical principles, such as approximation properties of piecewise polynomial spaces, and variational formulations of partial differential equations, but with a minimum level of advanced mathematical machinery from functional analysis and partial differential equations. In principle, the material should be accessible to students with only knowledge of calculus of several variables, basic partial differential equations, and linear algebra, as the necessary concepts from more advanced analysis are introduced when needed. Throughout the text we emphasize implementation of the involved algorithms, and have therefore mixed mathematical theory with concrete computer code using the numerical software MATLAB is and its PDE-Toolbox. We have also had the ambition to cover some of the most important applications of finite elements and the basic finite element methods developed for those applications, including diffusion and transport phenomena, solid and fluid mechanics, and also electromagnetics. . 410 0$aTexts in Computational Science and Engineering,$x1611-0994 ;$v10 606 $aComputer mathematics 606 $aPartial differential equations 606 $aMechanics 606 $aMechanics, Applied 606 $aComputer-aided engineering 606 $aComputational Science and Engineering$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/M14026 606 $aPartial Differential Equations$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/M12155 606 $aTheoretical and Applied Mechanics$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/T15001 606 $aComputer-Aided Engineering (CAD, CAE) and Design$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/I23044 606 $aComputational Mathematics and Numerical Analysis$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/M1400X 615 0$aComputer mathematics. 615 0$aPartial differential equations. 615 0$aMechanics. 615 0$aMechanics, Applied. 615 0$aComputer-aided engineering. 615 14$aComputational Science and Engineering. 615 24$aPartial Differential Equations. 615 24$aTheoretical and Applied Mechanics. 615 24$aComputer-Aided Engineering (CAD, CAE) and Design. 615 24$aComputational Mathematics and Numerical Analysis. 676 $a518/.25 686 $a004$2sdnb 700 $aLarson$b Mats G$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$01058928 702 $aBengzon$b Fredrik$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910437868303321 996 $aThe Finite Element Method: Theory, Implementation, and Applications$92503225 997 $aUNINA
