David J. Shepherd traces the evolution of the biblical film through the silent era, asking why the Bible attracted early film makers, how biblical films were indebted to other interpretive traditions, and how these films were received. Drawing upon rarely seen archival footage and early landmark films of directors such as Louis Feuillade, D. W. Griffith, Michael Curtis and Cecil B. DeMille, this history treats well-known biblical subjects including Joseph, Moses, David and Jesus, along with lesser-known biblical stars such as Jael, Judith and Jephthah's daughter. This book will be of great interest to students of Biblical studies, Jewish studies and film studies. 606 $aBible films$xHistory and criticism 606 $aSilent films$xReligious aspects 615 0$aBible films$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aSilent films$xReligious aspects. 676 $a791.43/682 700 $aShepherd$b David$f1972-$01051565 801 0$bUkCbUP 801 1$bUkCbUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910464265703321 996 $aThe Bible on silent film$92482157 997 $aUNINA LEADER 03554nam 2200565 450 001 9910437651103321 005 20200520144314.0 010 $a3-11-047755-6 010 $a3-11-047959-1 024 7 $a10.1515/9783110479591 035 $a(CKB)3850000000001042 035 $a(DE-B1597)466445 035 $a(OCoLC)1001370554 035 $a(OCoLC)1001962332 035 $a(DE-B1597)9783110479591 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL4911720 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr11423758 035 $a(CaONFJC)MIL1027671 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC4911720 035 $a(EXLCZ)993850000000001042 100 $a20170908h20172017 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurcnu|||||||| 181 $2rdacontent 182 $2rdamedia 183 $2rdacarrier 200 04$aThe role of music in European integration $econciliating eurocentrism and multiculturalism /$fedited by Albrecht Riethmu?ller 210 1$aBerlin, [Germany] ;$aBoston, [Massachusetts] :$cWalter de Gruyter GmbH,$d2017. 210 4$d©2017 215 $a1 online resource (268 pages) 225 1 $aDiscourses on Intellectual Europe ;$vVolume 2 311 $a3-11-047752-1 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references. 327 $tFrontmatter -- $tForeword by the Series Editor -- $tContents -- $tPreface -- $tMusic in Europe Today - A Dialogue -- $tSeid umschlungen, Millionen! - Zur Rezeption von Beethovens 9. Often music in Europe is defined by its relation to the concept of Occidentalism (Musik im Abendland; western music). The emphasis here turns rather to recent manifestations of its evolvement in ensembles, events, musical organisations and ideas; questions of unity and diversity from Bergen to Tel Aviv, from Lisbon to Baku; and deals with the tension between local, regional and national music within the larger confluence of European music. The status of classical and avante-garde music, and to a degree rock and pop, during Europe's development the past sixty years are also reviewed within the context of eurocentrism - the domination of European music within world music, a term propagated by anthropologists and ethnomusicologists several decades ago and based on multiculturalism. Conversely, the search for a musical European identity and the ways in which this search has in turn been influenced by multiculturalism is an ongoing, dynamic process. 410 0$aDiscourses on intellectual Europe ;$vVolume 2. 606 $aMusic$xSocial aspects$zEurope 610 $aEthnomusicology. 610 $aEuropean identity. 610 $aMulticulturalism. 615 0$aMusic$xSocial aspects 676 $a780.94/0904 702 $aRiethmu?ller$b Albrecht 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910437651103321 996 $aThe role of music in European integration$91940946 997 $aUNINA
