Le nombre de ces points de franchissement, leur pérennité et la variété des vestiges qui leur sont associés (habitats de l?Âge du Bronze, pavages d?époque romaine, pêcheries, moulins et clayonnages médiévaux, etc.) montrent que le lit mineur de la rivière était un lieu d?implantation humaine au même titre que ses rives. L?étude des gués permet également d?aborder d?autres sujets comme la présence à leurs abords de certains types d?objets aux époques protohistoriques et romaines, les motifs de traversée, la complémentarité avec les ponts ou les bacs, l?imaginaire lié au milieu fluvial. Les recherches menées depuis trente ans sur la Saône en Chalonnais (sous la direction de Louis Bonnamour), et sans lesquelles ce travail n?existerait pas, ont également prouvé que les cours d?eau pouvaient encore receler des aménagements conservés en place, malgré les travaux incessants dont ils sont l?objet depuis le XIXe siècle.
