Based on travelogues from European travelers, recently found Arab sources, historical maps and results from several expeditions, the book gives an overview of the historical periods of the caravan trade as well as detailed information about the infrastructure which was necessary to establish those trade networks. Included are a variety of unique historical and recent maps as well as remote sensing images of the important trade routes and the corresponding historic oases. To give a deeper understanding of how those trading networks work, aspects such as culturally influenced concepts of spatial orientation are discussed. The book aims to be a useful reference for the caravan trade in the Sahara, that can be recommended both to students and to specialists and researchers in the field of Geography, History and African Studies. 606 $aAfrica?Economic conditions 606 $aHistorical geography 606 $aAfrica, North?History 606 $aRemote sensing 606 $aEthnology?Africa 610 $aAfrican Economics 610 $aHistorical Geography 610 $aHistory of North Africa 610 $aRemote Sensing/Photogrammetry 610 $aAfrican Culture 610 $aEconomy-wide Country Studies 610 $aCaravan Trading in the 19th century 610 $aLibyan Sahara 610 $aCentral Sahara 610 $aOpen Access 610 $aAtlas of Caravan Tracks 610 $aHistorical Maps 610 $aConcepts of Spacial Orientation 610 $aTrade Networks 610 $aCaravan Routes 610 $a19th century Trade in the Sahara 610 $aTrans-Saharan trails 610 $aHistoric Oases 610 $aEconomics 610 $aHistorical geography 610 $aAfrican history 610 $aGeographical information systems & remote sensing 610 $aCultural studies 615 0$aAfrica?Economic conditions. 615 0$aHistorical geography. 615 0$aAfrica, North?History. 615 0$aRemote sensing. 615 0$aEthnology?Africa. 676 $a330.0096 700 $aBraun$b Klaus$4edt$0417431 702 $aBraun$b Klaus$4edt$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/edt 702 $aPasson$b Jacqueline$4edt$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/edt 801 2$bUkMaJRU 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910416134603321 996 $aAcross the Sahara$93387935 997 $aUNINA
