The Chinese name for the Pearl River is Zhujiang. Guangzhou lies at the head of the estuary, and Macau and Hong Kong are on the western and eastern sides, respectively, of the wide opening of the estuary to the South China Sea. The new cities of Zhuhai and Shenzhen lie immediately north of Macau and Hong Kong, respectively. The recent establishment of the Greater Bay Area (GBA), which covers the majority of the Pearl River Delta area, with a total population of over 70 million, will certainly put the PRE under strict environmental scrutiny. The PRE system itself will provide a model system for environmental scientists owing to its major anthropogenic perturbation and influences, as well as the highly dynamic nature of the estuary. This book addresses the major environmental concerns regarding this estuary, contaminants and other pollutants, e.g. toxic metals, organic contaminants and emerging compounds. Questions addressed here include: What are the sources of the contaminants? What have the environmental consequences of these contaminants been for the estuary? What will the future bring? The research presented here on the Pearl River Estuary offers a wealth of insights for other major contaminated estuaries around the world. 410 0$aEstuaries of the World,$x2214-1553 606 $aAquatic ecology  606 $aEcotoxicology 606 $aEnvironmental sciences 606 $aEnvironmental monitoring 606 $aFreshwater & Marine Ecology$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/L19066 606 $aEcotoxicology$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/U25001 606 $aEnvironmental Science and Engineering$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/G37000 606 $aMonitoring/Environmental Analysis$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/U1400X 606 $aContaminació de l'aigua$2thub 606 $aDeltes$2thub 607 $aCanton (Xina)$2thub 608 $aLlibres electrònics$2thub 615 0$aAquatic ecology . 615 0$aEcotoxicology. 615 0$aEnvironmental sciences. 615 0$aEnvironmental monitoring. 615 14$aFreshwater & Marine Ecology. 615 24$aEcotoxicology. 615 24$aEnvironmental Science and Engineering. 615 24$aMonitoring/Environmental Analysis. 615 7$aContaminació de l'aigua 615 7$aDeltes 676 $a363.730951 700 $aWang$b Wen-Xiong$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$0949945 702 $aRainbow$b Philip S$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910416105903321 996 $aEnvironmental Pollution of the Pearl River Estuary, China$92147579 997 $aUNINA
