It explores the effects of collapse of socialist governance and management systems on land use in various parts of Central Asia, including former Soviet Union republics, Mongolia and northern drylands of China. Often, regional land-atmosphere feedbacks may have large global importance. Remote sensing is a primary tool in studying vast dryland territories where in situ observations are sporadic. State-of-the-art methods of satellite remote sensing combined with GIS and models are used to tackle science questions and provide an outlook of current changes at land surface and potential scenarios for the future. In 10 chapters, contributing authors cover topics such as water resources, effects of institutional changes on urban centers and agriculture, landscape dynamics, and the primary drivers of environmental changes in dryland environment. Satellite observations that have accumulated during the last five decades provide a rich time series of the dynamic land surface, enabling systematic analysis of changes in land cover and land use from space. The book is a truly international effort by a team of scientists from the U.S., Europe and Central Asia. It is directed at the broad science community including graduate students, academics and other professionals at all levels within natural and social sciences. In particular, it will appeal to geographers, environmental and social scientists, economists, agricultural scientists, and remote sensing specialists. 410 0$aLandscape Series,$x1572-7742 ;$v17 606 $aEcosystems 606 $aRemote sensing 606 $aLandscape ecology 606 $aUrban ecology (Biology) 606 $aClimatology 606 $aEcosystems$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/L1904X 606 $aRemote Sensing/Photogrammetry$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/J13010 606 $aLandscape Ecology$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/L19058 606 $aUrban Ecology$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/L19160 606 $aClimatology$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/311000 606 $aEcologia del paisatge$2thub 606 $aRegions àrides$2thub 607 $aÀsia central$2thub 608 $aLlibres electrònics$2thub 615 0$aEcosystems. 615 0$aRemote sensing. 615 0$aLandscape ecology. 615 0$aUrban ecology (Biology). 615 0$aClimatology. 615 14$aEcosystems. 615 24$aRemote Sensing/Photogrammetry. 615 24$aLandscape Ecology. 615 24$aUrban Ecology. 615 24$aClimatology. 615 7$aEcologia del paisatge 615 7$aRegions àrides 676 $a111.85 702 $aGutman$b Garik$4edt$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/edt 702 $aChen$b Jiquan$4edt$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/edt 702 $aHenebry$b Geoffrey M$4edt$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/edt 702 $aKappas$b Martin$4edt$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/edt 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910409698503321 996 $aLandscape Dynamics of Drylands across Greater Central Asia: People, Societies and Ecosystems$92531824 997 $aUNINA
