The evidence for this consists of nineteen Greek and Latin inscriptions in which women bear the titles "head of the synagogue," "leader," "elder," "mother of the synagogue" and "priestess." These inscriptions range in date from 27 B.C.E. to perhaps the sixth century C.E. and in provenance from Italy to Asia Minor, Egypt and Palestine. While new discoveries make this a growing corpus of material, a number of the inscriptions have been known to scholars for some time. The book contains a new preface by the author. 410 0$aBrown Judaic studies ;$v36. 606 $aWomen in Judaism$xHistory 606 $aSynagogues$xOrganization and administration$xHistory 606 $aJews$xHistory$y168 B.C.-135 A.D 606 $aJews$xHistory$y70-638 606 $aJudaism$2bicssc 615 0$aWomen in Judaism$xHistory. 615 0$aSynagogues$xOrganization and administration$xHistory. 615 0$aJews$xHistory 615 0$aJews$xHistory 615 7$aJudaism 676 $a296.082 700 $aBrooten$b Bernadette J.$0846275 801 0$bMdBmJHUP 801 1$bMdBmJHUP 801 2$bUkMaJRU 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910404757003321 996 $aWomen leaders in the ancient synagogue$93359697 997 $aUNINA
