Electoral Systems and Active Members. 330 $aThis book explores the impact of electoral rules on political party development in Central and East Europe. It finds that ?high district magnitude? proportional electoral systems encourage centralised organisational development and campaigning ? where communication with voters is conducted primarily via mass, social and digital media ? while small electoral districts stimulate grassroots campaigning. As a result, low magnitude electoral systems are more likely to create an active role for party members, stimulating membership recruitment. The book further examines how parties organise and campaign on the ground. The analysis of in-depth surveys and interviews with party elites in Estonia, Lithuania and Slovakia sheds light on areas of party life that are rarely examined, including party fundraising. Overall, the effects of electoral systems on party organisation and campaigning reflect patterns previously observed in Western Europe, demonstrating that a degree of convergence has occurred. Alison F. Smith is a lecturer in comparative government, European politics and Russian politics. She has published several academic articles on the roles of political party members in Central and East Europe. 410 0$aSt Antony's Series,$x2633-5964 606 $aEurope?Politics and government 606 $aElections 606 $aArea studies 606 $aDemocracy 606 $aComparative politics 606 $aPolitical communication 606 $aEuropean Politics$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/911130 606 $aElectoral Politics$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/911070 606 $aArea Studies$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/X22045 606 $aDemocracy$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/911050 606 $aComparative Politics$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/911040 606 $aPolitical Communication$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/911030 615 0$aEurope?Politics and government. 615 0$aElections. 615 0$aArea studies. 615 0$aDemocracy. 615 0$aComparative politics. 615 0$aPolitical communication. 615 14$aEuropean Politics. 615 24$aElectoral Politics. 615 24$aArea Studies. 615 24$aDemocracy. 615 24$aComparative Politics. 615 24$aPolitical Communication. 676 $a324.20947 700 $aSmith$b Alison F$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$0243656 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910404158803321 996 $aPolitical Party Membership in New Democracies$92266187 997 $aUNINA
