Despite its residents reporting the third-highest level of protest participation in the region, Peru has been largely ignored in these discussions. In this groundbreaking study, Moises Arce exposes a longstanding climate of popular contention in Peru. Looking beneath the surface to the subnational, regional, and local level as inception points, he rigorously dissects the political conditions that set the stage for protest. Focusing on natural resource extraction and its key role in the political economy of Peru and other developing countries, Arce reveals a wide disparity in the incidence, forms, and consequences of collective action. Through empirical analysis of protest events over thirty-one years, extensive personal interviews with policymakers and societal actors, and individual case studies of major protest episodes, Arce follows the ebb and flow of Peruvian protests over time and space to show the territorial unevenness of democracy, resource extraction, and antimarket contentions. Employing political process theory, Arce builds an interactive framework that views the moderating role of democracy, the quality of institutional representation as embodied in political parties, and most critically, the level of political party competition as determinants in the variation of protest and subsequent government response. Overall, he finds that both the fluidity and fragmentation of political parties at the subnational level impair the mechanisms of accountability and responsiveness often attributed to party competition. Thus, as political fragmentation increases, political opportunities expand, and contention rises. These dynamics in turn shape the long-term development of the state. Resource Extraction and Protest in Peru will inform students and scholars of globalization, market transitions, political science, contentious politics and Latin America generally, as a comparative analysis relating natural resource extraction to democratic processes both regionally and internationally"--$cProvided by publisher. 410 0$aPitt Latin American series. 606 $aNatural resources$xPolitical aspects$zPeru$xHistory 606 $aProtest movements$zPeru$xHistory 606 $aDemocracy$zPeru$xHistory 606 $aPolitical parties$zPeru$xHistory 607 $aPeru$xEconomic conditions$y1968- 607 $aPeru$xPolitics and government$y1980- 607 $aPeru$xSocial conditions 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aNatural resources$xPolitical aspects$xHistory. 615 0$aProtest movements$xHistory. 615 0$aDemocracy$xHistory. 615 0$aPolitical parties$xHistory. 676 $a333.80985 700 $aArce$b Moise?s$0992068 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910463292303321 996 $aResource extraction and protest in Peru$92270464 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02767oam 2200457 450 001 9910404146803321 005 20200610024232.0 010 $a0-429-89251-9 010 $a0-429-47003-7 035 $a(CKB)4100000011255915 035 $a(OCoLC)1153336839 035 $a(OCoLC-P)1153336839 035 $a(FlBoTFG)9780429470035 035 $a(EXLCZ)994100000011255915 100 $a20200411h20202020 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur||||||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cn$2rdamedia 183 $anc$2rdacarrier 200 00$aExploring Greek manuscripts in the Library at Wellcome Collection in London /$fedited by Petros Bouras-Vallianatos 210 1$aAbingdon, Oxon ;$aNew York, NY :$cRoutledge,$d2020. 210 4$dİ2020 215 $a1 online resource (xxiv, 190 pages) $cillustrations 311 $a1-138-60159-4 327 $aThe Wellcome Greek collection / Petros Bouras-Vallianatos -- Greek manuscripts in the Library at Wellcome Collection : owners and cataloguers / Vivian Nutton -- The clinical method of the Anonymous of Paris / Orly Lewis -- Wellcomensis MS.MSL.14 as a therapeutic handbook / Barbara Zipser -- The language of Iatrosophia : a case-study of two manuscripts of the Library at Wellcome Collection (MS.4103 and MS.MSL.14) / Tina Lendari and Io Manolessou -- Jewish astronomy in Byzantium : the case of Wellcomensis MS.498 / Anne Tihon -- Manuel Korinthios' poems in Wellcomensis MS.498 / Maria Tomadaki -- Greek Renaissance commentaries on the Organon : the Codex Wellcomensis MS.MSL.1 / Nikos Agiotis. 330 $a"This book offers new insights into a largely understudied group of Greek texts preserved in selected manuscripts from the Library at Wellcome Collection, London.
