Peter Herriot argues that contrary to their apparent differences, these human phenomena are similar in two basic respects. First, they are both reactions against the complexities of the modern world in general, and its current crisis in particular. They propose instead a return to a mythical golden age, supposedly marked by purity and simplicity. Second, they both work in the same way psychologically. Using social identity theory, Herriot shows how both populism and fundamentalism create constant conflict by contrasting a virtuous 'Us' with a stereotypically evil 'Them'. Contemporary case studies illustrate this process at work, and Herriot raises various issues as a basis for discussion, and concludes with hope. 606 $aReligion and sociology 606 $aReligion and politics 606 $aPsychology and religion 606 $aSociology of Religion 606 $aPolitics and Religion 606 $aPsychology of Religion and Spirituality 615 0$aReligion and sociology. 615 0$aReligion and politics. 615 0$aPsychology and religion. 615 14$aSociology of Religion. 615 24$aPolitics and Religion. 615 24$aPsychology of Religion and Spirituality. 676 $a320.5662 676 $a200 700 $aHerriot$b Peter$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$0159934 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bCaOWtU 912 $a9910390857903321 996 $aPopulism, Fundamentalism, and Identity$92169291 997 $aUNINA
