Beyond John Rawls? original intention to limit the scope of political liberalism to only existing and well-ordered liberal democracies, political liberalism has the potential to inspire and contribute to democratic establishment and maintenance in East Asia. Specifically, the book has two main objectives. First, it will demonstrate that political liberalism offers the most promising vision for liberal democracy, and it can be defended against contemporary perfectionist objections. Second, it will show that perfectionist approaches to political Confucianism suffer from practical and theoretical difficulties. Instead, an alternative model of democracy inspired by political liberalism will be explored in order to achieve a multivariate structure for citizens to come to terms with democracy in their own ways, to support a neutral state that ensures the establishment and stability of democracy, and to maintain an active public role for Confucianism to prevent it from being banished to the private sphere. This model represents a more promising future for democracy in East Asia. 410 0$aPhilosophy and Politics - Critical Explorations,$x2352-8370 ;$v12 606 $aPolitical philosophy 606 $aPolitical theory 606 $aPhilosophy, Asian 606 $aComparative politics 606 $aDemocracy 606 $aPolitical Philosophy$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/E37000 606 $aPolitical Theory$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/911010 606 $aNon-Western Philosophy$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/E44060 606 $aComparative Politics$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/911040 606 $aDemocracy$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/911050 615 0$aPolitical philosophy. 615 0$aPolitical theory. 615 0$aPhilosophy, Asian. 615 0$aComparative politics. 615 0$aDemocracy. 615 14$aPolitical Philosophy. 615 24$aPolitical Theory. 615 24$aNon-Western Philosophy. 615 24$aComparative Politics. 615 24$aDemocracy. 676 $a321.8095 700 $aLi$b Zhuoyao$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$0957707 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910390857103321 996 $aPolitical Liberalism, Confucianism, and the Future of Democracy in East Asia$92169290 997 $aUNINA
